Reportan muertes de indocumentados en instalaciones de ICE
La red de televisión Univisión reportó recientemente que más de 150 inmigrantes indocumentados han muerto en las instalaciones de Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) durante los últimos 10 años.
De acuerdo con estadísticas del periódico La Opinión, las causas de la muerte incluyen el suicidio, negligencia médica y vejez.
En noticias relacionadas, un grupo de activistas protestó el 20 de agosto afuera de las oficinas de ICE en Arizona exigiendo justicia por la muerte de 14 inmigrantes en la prisión del condado Eloy. Durante la protesta, la gente se colocó en ataúdes representando a las personas que murieron en la localidad.
“Sabemos que mucha gente está desesperada”, citó Fox News Latino a la manifestante María Rodríguez. “Hay … gente… en necesidad… de medicina, hay muchos otros que tienen problemas sicológicos y… no han recibido la atención médica apropiada. Muchos de ellos están muy asustados”.
Puente, la organización no lucrativa que organizó la protesta, declaró en un comunicado de prensa que exigiría la completa transparencia con respecto a todas las muertes en las localidades de ICE, particularmente la muerte del inmigrante indocumentado José de Jesús.
“No nos detendremos hasta que tengamos justicia para José de Jesús y toda la gente que ha muerto en… custodia (del ICE)” fue citada a Francisca Porchas, miembro de Puente, en el comunicado.
ICE no ha hecho ningún comentario sobre la protesta.

Undocumented deaths reported at ICE facilities

The TV network Univision recently reported that more than 150 undocumented immigrants have died at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities during the past 10 years.
According to statistics from the newspaper La Opinion, the causes of death have included suicide, medical negligence and old age.
In related news, a group of activists protested on Aug. 20 outside ICE’s offices in Arizona demanding justice for the death of 14 immigrants in the Eloy County Jail. During the demonstration, people placed coffins representing people who had died at the facility.
“We know that a lot of people are desperate,” demonstrator Maria Rodriguez was quoted by Fox News Latino as saying. “There … (are) people … (in) need … (of) medicines, there are many others who have psychological problems and … have not received the proper medical attention. A lot of them are very scared.”
Puente, the non-profit organization that organized the demonstration, stated in a news release that it would demand full transparency regarding all the deaths at ICE’s facilities, particularly the death of undocumented immigrant Jose de Jesus.
“We won’t stop until we have justice for Jose de Jesus and all (the) people who have died in … (ICE’s) custody,” Francisca Porchas, a member of Puente, was quoted in the release as saying.
ICE hasn’t made any comments about the demonstration.
