Deputies shoot Hispanic man in Texas

Video of shooting stirs accusations of racial profiling

By Chara

Video of a Hispanic man being killed by Bexar County (Texas) deputies has some people wondering if the incident is a case of racial profiling.
Broadcast recently on a San Antonio TV station, the video shows the suspect, 41-year-old Gilbert Flores, with at least one hand in the air. The deputies are then seen firing upon Flores, who has been accused of resisting arrest.
According to CNN, the Sheriff’s Office of Bexar County has announced the existence of a second video that shows a better view of what happened. However, it hasn’t been released it to the public because it’s considered part of the office’s investigation. Bexar County Sheriff Susan Pamerleau said the second video is an important piece of evidence in the case.
“Certainly what’s in the video is a cause for concern. But it’s important to let the investigation go through its course, so we can ensure a thorough and complete review of all that occurred,” Pamerleau was quoted by CNN as saying.
In response to Pamerleau’s comments, U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas tweeted: “I hope the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office will release the second video in the Gilbert Flores shooting as soon as possible.”
Until the Sheriff’s Office of Bexar County releases the second video and the investigation concludes, many Hispanics will see the case as a racial profiling crime. Texas resident Fernando Lopez is among those who think the killing is connected to Flores’ “skin color.”
“In the last couple of months, we have seen police officers acting without thinking,” Lopez said. “The fact that they don’t want to show the second video just makes us wonder … what really happened that night. We demand justice. We want this crime to be solved before it (police brutality) spreads across the country.”
