Charter school opens doors of its new home to Marcelo Claure and Prince Royce

By Melissa Arroyo

This school semester, students and staff at Alta Vista Charter School are off to an exciting start. Shortly after relocating to their new permanent home, the Alta Vista community had the opportunity to welcome President and CEO of Sprint Marcelo Claure and bachata singer Prince Royce.
Both Royce and Claure participated in a brief conference session with the students. “I’m very excited to be in a room full of people who speak my language.” Said Claure, who is originally from Bolivia.
Motivating the crowd of students into becoming CEOs in the future, Claure mentioned that Hispanics have a 60 percent potential of becoming CEOs. “But currently there are only two Hispanic CEOs.”
Both Claure and Prince Royce talked about the importance of community involvement. “I feel great to have the opportunity to be here,” said Royce. “I know how hard it can be because I came from a very hard neighborhood. I believe 120% percent in giving back to the community.”
He also talked to the students about the importance of going after their dreams so they can become a reality.  “Everyday I woke up and said to myself I’m going to be a singer,” he said. “I worked at Sprint and saved every paycheck and with that I paid for my first demo/album.”
Additionally, the school settled into its new home earlier in the semester at the former Hope Academy building on 1524 The Paseo Ave. in Kansas City, Mo., to address its rapidly changing academic needs.
Equipped with larger classrooms, library space, computer labs and a gym, the new building offers students a more traditional and inspiring learning environment.
“This building gives us the opportunity to inspire a community-oriented mindset,” said Gilberto Guerrero, Alta Vista director of education. “We’re not from (the) Westside or north side; we are one big community.”
Guerrero witnessed the struggle the students faced in the classroom, but also noticed when the students’ academic performance improved.
“Our kids struggled, but they learned – and now, we have one of the highest achievement rates in many areas,” he said. “Our students rank the highest in math in the state.”
Guerrero attributes the students’ academic success to making improvements to the curriculum, listening to the students, keeping class sizes small and partnering with several organizations around the country.
“The best part of this journey is that we found educational leaders,” he said. “Our educators were also learners, and we improved by listening to our students.”
