Huracán Patricia, ¿intervención divina?

Patricia

Hurricane Patricia, was there a divine intervention?

By Paula Alzate
Hurricane Patricia made its presence felt in Mexico, but didn’t inflict the amount of damage some Mexicans and weather experts probably had feared.
On Oct. 22, the NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center reported a tropical storm on the southwestern coast of Mexico – the beginning of what would become Hurricane Patricia. On Oct. 23, it was upgraded from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. According to various news outlets, it’s the strongest hurricane on record.
Winds of more than 200 mph and gusts of 250 mph were expected to hit Mexico on Oct. 24, prompting authorities to evacuate people from cities such as Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo and Guadalajara. That evening, Hurricane Patricia struck Mexico, but not with as much force as had been expected. According to news reports, it weakened as it approached land. Winds were reported at 165 mph that evening.
The Mexican states of Baja California, Colima, Nayarit and Jalisco experienced large amounts of rainfall. As of Monday (Oct. 26), damage had been reported, but no deaths or injuries.
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto (Peña Nieto in Spanish) is advising Mexicans to not let down their guard regarding the storm.
The Daily Beast examined the rapid change in the hurricane. According to Kerry Emmanuel, professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “the mountains of Mexico made it weaken faster than other hurricanes, due to the force of the drag exerted by their elevated surface on the structure of the storm.”
Emmanuel said the hurricane’s strength resulted from temperature changes because of global warming. According to Emmanuel, the Western Pacific may experience stronger tropical storms and hurricanes because of global warming-induced climate change. However, even with all the scientific evidence, one has to wonder if there was a divine intervention.
