Mexican company leading the way

A Mexican company is at the forefront of what could be the latest trend: “flying backpacks.”
The company is Tecnologia Aeroespacial Mexicana (TAM). Founded by Mexican Juan Manuel Lozano Gallegos, the company makes Rocket Belts. The device has a turbine that ties to an adult’s body and allows a person to fly.
The TAM Rocket Belt has been featured on several TV shows, including programs on the Discovery Channel and the BBC. In addition, the Rocket Belt has been used at various sports events, including the Super Bowl.
Over time, TAM’s flying backpacks have changed in design. In 2006, Mexican woman Isabel Lozano was the first person to use a flying backpack attached to a vest. According to the TAM Web site, Lozano’s flying backpack was custom built for her by her father.
On its Web site, the company states that people who want to use a Rocket Belt need to get used to the feeling of the controls. Although it seems pretty easy to master, the Rocket Belt can be difficult to control and it requires time to master.
Rocket Belts also must be customized for each pilot. Pilots may choose among three rocket engines, five control valves and five nozzle configurations.
TAM offers basic flight training to those who order a Rocket Belt. It also offers customer support 24/7.
