Alcalde ayuda escuela celebrar aniversario 150

Alcalde

On Monday (Feb. 1), Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Sly James helped a local school celebrate a milestone while commemorating 2016 as a special year.
The mayor visited St. Teresa’s Academy, a Catholic, all-girl school celebrating its 150th anniversary. While there, he was interviewed by St. Teresa’s journalism students, learned about bacteria in a science class and looked over physics projects.
Nan Boone, St. Teresa’s president, introduced the student body to the mayor, highlighting the students’ accomplishments and what they’ve learned through the years.
“Each young woman has been educated by the best teachers and staff (members),” Boone said. “They have been taught the importance of paying it forward…. (They) are brilliant scientists, mathematicians, singers, artists, writers, athletes; but most importantly, they are – first and foremost – women of compassion. Each young woman (serves) … 50-plus service agencies in the Kansas City area each year.”
Mayor James also gave a speech during his visit. He stressed the importance of education for minorities and called the education of young ladies “extremely important.”
“Let me ask you to remember that you (ladies) are in a lot of ways (part of) the minority,” James said. “But through education, you will have the opportunity to help increase the opportunity (for other girls to be educated) by sharing what you know.”
Mayor James also discussed some of his own accomplishments during his two terms in office, such as emphasizing inclusiveness in city government by including women and minorities on the city’s boards and in its commission groups. In addition, he cited projects and initiatives that’ve been developed on his watch, such as the Woman in Power Initiative, a program that integrates women into governmental decision-making and puts them in leadership positions.
“The city that we are building here today isn’t for me,” he said. “(It) is not for … (these) older folks back here. We are building the city for the next 20-50 years. The decisions that we make today are the foundation of what will be … (here) when you are running the city.”
Other topics James covered included the importance of women supporting one another and valuing their roles in society. He closed by proclaiming 2016 as “The Year of the Young Woman” and encouraged the students to “appreciate it, take advantage of it and go out there and support those values” young women embody.
“There is no failure in failure,” he said. “Only success comes out of failure.”
