Grandparents raising grandchildren: Some tips and considerations

Commentary by Carey Juez-Perez

Many grandparents are the primary caregivers of their grandchildren. Despite having handled parenting duties before, caregiving can feel foreign when raising a children later in life. However, with some support and guidance, grandparents can help their grandchildren feel safe, secure and loved.
The following are some tips and issues to consider if you’re a grandparent raising your grandchild or grandchildren:

*Recognize your feelings: You might feel resentful or angry at the parents – or perhaps grief and loss. It’s important that you acknowledge your feelings – both good and bad – and take time to cope with the situation in a healthy manner.
*Care for yourself: Remember, you must be healthy before you can take care of others. Your energy level might be different than when you were a first-time parent, and completing daily chores and playing with your grandchild or grandchildren might seem overwhelming. So know your limits, ask for help, join a grandparent support group and take time for yourself to re-energize.
*Support the child or children: Children also experience a wide range of emotions, such as feeling abandoned and upset. Offer support and empathy. And remember, children often act out when they feel secure to test the boundaries. Establishing routines, offering time to talk and play, attending therapy, and creating fair and consistent rules can help grandchildren adjust to a new lifestyle.
*Include the parent or parents, if possible: If possible and/or reasonable, encourage phone calls and visits. Communicate with the parent, rather than putting your grandchild or grandchildren in the middle. And continue to talk with your grandchild or grandchildren, being sensitive to their feelings and coaching them through feelings of disappointment.
