Topeka to host Kansas Mariachi Festival

By Chara
Mexican Independence Day isn’t the only celebration scheduled for this Friday (Sept. 16).
From 6 to 11 p.m. that day, the Kansas Mariachi Festival will celebrate Mexican culture and heritage – and Mexican Independence Day, naturally – at the Topeka Performing Arts Center, located at 214 S.E. Eighth Ave.
The concert will start at 6 and feature Mariachi Aguilas de America and Mariachi Corazon de San Antonio. Following the concert, there’ll be a street party from 8 to 11, with food and drinks for sale.
The entrance fee is $15 at the box office or $50 for visitors who decide to take a Mariachi class. Taught by Rachel Yvonne Cruz, the class will cover Mariachi history, instruments and attire, and include a rehearsal.
Anyone who’s interested in attending the class must arrive by 1 p.m. at the center. Class participants also must bring their own instruments.
