Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos is the winner of the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Oct. 7.
Ironically, the announcement came just days after Colombians had rejected a referendum for a peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), with 50.2 percent opposed and 49.8 percent in favor, according to The Guardian. In an official announcement, the committee explained its reason for honoring Santos, despite Colombia’s rejection of the referendum.
“The civil war in Colombia is one of the longest civil wars in modern times and the sole remaining armed conflict in the Americas,” the committee stated. “It is the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s firm belief that President Santos, despite the ‘no’ majority vote … (on) the referendum, has brought the bloody conflict significantly closer to a peaceful solution – and that much of the groundwork has been laid for both the verifiable disarmament of the FARC guerrillas and a historic process of national fraternity and reconciliation.”
The committee also paid tribute to Santos’ fellow Colombians.
“The award should also be seen as a tribute to the Colombian people – who despite great hardships and abuses, have not given up hope of a just peace – and to all the parties who have contributed to the peace process,” it stated. “This tribute is paid, not least, to the representatives of the countless victims of the civil war.”
During a phone interview posted on the official Nobel website, nobelprize.org, President Santos also commented on Colombia’s division over the referendum.
“There are some people who have not been supporting the government in this peace process,” Santos stated. “We are talking to them. As a matter of fact, we started talks with them just a couple of days ago – and I hope that they understand how important (they are) to also contribute to support this process, because the peace would be much stronger and much more durable if it is supported by every single Colombian.”

El 7 de octubre, el Comité Nobel noruego anunció al presidente de Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos como el ganador del Premio Nobel de la Paz 2016 y de manera irónica el anuncio se produjo pocos días después de que los colombianos rechazaran el referéndum para un acuerdo de paz con las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), con un porcentaje de 50.2 en contra y un 49,8 por ciento a favor, de acuerdo con The Guardian. En un anuncio oficial, el comité explicó su razón de entregar el premio a Santos, a pesar del rechazo de Colombia al referéndum.
“La guerra civil en Colombia es una de las guerras civiles más largas en la modernidad y el único conflicto armado que queda en América”, indicó el comité. “El Comité Nobel de Noruega tiene la firme creencia de que el presidente Santos, a pesar del voto de de la mayoría sobre el referéndum, ha acercado a este sangriento conflicto a una solución pacífica – y que gran parte de su trabajo ha sido encargarse del desarme de las guerrillas de la FARC y un proceso histórico de fraternidad y reconciliación nacional “.
El comité también rindió homenaje a los colombianos.
“El premio también debe ser visto como un tributo para los colombianos – que a pesar de grandes dificultades y abusos, no han perdido la esperanza de paz y justicia – y a todos los que que han contribuido a este proceso”, manifestó. “Este tributo fue pagado por las innumerables víctimas de la guerra civil.”
Durante una entrevista telefónica publicada en la página oficial del Nobel, nobelprize.org, el presidente Santos comentó sobre la división de los colombianos en relación al referéndum.
“Hay personas que no han apoyado al gobierno en este proceso de paz”, indicó Santos. “Estamos hablando con ellos. De hecho, empezamos a tener conversaciones con ellos hace un par de días – y espero que entiendan lo importante que es su contribución al apoyo de este proceso, debido a que la paz sería mucho más fuerte y duradera, si es apoyada por todos y cada uno de los colombianos”.
