On Oct. 7, the Mattie Rhodes Art Gallery opened its doors for its 18th annual Dia de los Muertos Art Exhibit and Celebration.
Running through November, with a closing reception on Nov. 4, the art gallery will showcase the works of art and Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) altars from several local families and artists. Angela Brunner, Mattie Rhodes marketing and events coordinator, helped organize this year’s event with the arts team for the third year.
“One of the things I like about the event is the turnout,” Brunner said. “We get kids visiting from different school groups, … from (the) Lake of the Ozarks, St. Louis, Topeka and also in the area, so we get to meet a lot of kids and learn their stories.”
Brunner said that one of the goals at Mattie Rhodes is to bring the community together to start a discussion, to start learning and exploring cultures.
“Every year is different,” Brunner said. “There are altars that tug at your heartstrings and that are very personal…. We also have some unique altars, … whether it’s something very personal or a new fun thing to explore.”
From the decorations of the altar to the pictures and the personal belongings of the deceased person, each altar depicts the personal experience that each family had when their loved one died. According to Brunner, some of the families participate as part of the healing process.
“One of the families took a few years to be able to come and share their stories,” she said. “It’s a very personal experience, because these families are putting personal items on the altars for everyone to see…. It takes a while for people to be able to share that story and to talk about it.”
Ultimately, the most important takeaway, according to the organizers, is to celebrate life by keeping the memories of people alive, whether they’re living or dead.
