It’s important to quit smoking when you’re pregnant

Commentary by Chara

Smoking is harmful for the body – especially for a woman and her baby during pregnancy.
Research shows that women who smoke while pregnant are more likely to have a miscarriage than those who don’t because cigarettes contain harmful substances that cause the placenta to separate from the womb. In addition, smoking can cause a premature birth, which can result in a dangerously low birth weight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Moreover, babies born to women who smoke might suffer from birth defects. They can even die shortly after they’re born from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Women who smoke while they’re pregnant also should consider that the amount of oxygen available to their baby is lower than normal and the baby’s heart rate increases. As a result, the baby’s risk of eventually developing respiratory diseases increases.
If you’re a smoker and are planning to get pregnant, you should consider quitting. To quit smoking, try hiding your matches, lighters and ashtrays; ask people to not smoke in front of you; try to become more physically active; and try to chew gum or eat candy when you feel like smoking.
If you need extra tools to help you achieve your goal to stop smoking, talk to your doctor about attending a smoking cessation program. Remember, it’s important to protect your health – and the health of your baby.
