Anti-Trump protestors take their message to the streets

Less than a week after the U.S. presidential election results had been revealed, a series of protests spread across the nation, as Americans expressed disapproval of President-elect Donald Trump.
Those protests included several in the Kansas City area, with hundreds protesting recently in front of Kansas City (Mo.) City Hall. And on Nov. 12, a small group of anarchist protestors gathered at the J.C. Nichols Fountain at the Plaza to begin a protest against the election and the establishment.
“The reason we’re here is not a question of disappointment or a question of fear.… If you want to change things, if you want to struggle and strive for a different kind of life, the only hope we have today, unfortunately, is to push into circuits of capital, commercial spaces and disrupt those to the fullest extent,” said a protest organizer, who requested anonymity.
Holding signs with such statements as “America was never great” and “No more presidents,” the protesters marched from the fountain and into the streets. They blocked traffic on 47th Street until they turned around at Jefferson Street, where they were met by police officers and continued their protest marching east on the sidewalk.
Shoppers and visitors watched curiously from the sidewalks and restaurant patios as the group chanted their disapproval of Trump, who lost the popular vote in the Nov. 8 election, but won the election based on electoral votes. The protestors also expressed their disapproval of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, capitalism and law enforcement.
Some of the shoppers exchanged harsh words with some of the protestors. There also was at least one attempt to drive a car through the group. Kansas City Police Department officers ended the protest.
It probably won’t be the last protest on the Plaza, one protestor suggested.
“The only path that we’re left with is to go into (the Trump voters’) comfortable spaces,” the protestor said. “(We need to) go into their quiet neighborhoods and to their fun weekend (at the Plaza) and carve our own space out for ourselves. And we will continue to do that until we have our own liberation.”
