Volunteers help make Kansas City a wonderful place to live.
As vice president of global information security for Bank of America, and a board member and senior advisor for Latinos of Tomorrow, I’m committed to being a community and volunteer advocate. And in my three plus years with my company and 20-plus years of living in the Kansas City area, I’ve seen firsthand the impact that volunteerism has on our community.
My Bank of America colleagues and I are fortunate to be able to volunteer up to two hours each week during work hours. We also can further support organizations where we volunteer regularly by applying for grants on their behalf. Putting our interests and expertise toward a worthy cause is rewarding and meaningful, not to mention a great way to build new skillsets.
Whether you’re looking for a onetime activity, a recurring commitment or an initiative you can take part in as your schedule allows, the following are some ways you can blend your work with volunteerism:
*Plan a volunteering event with your coworkers (or family and friends): Determine what types of non-profits you’d like to assist and ask them if there are any activities in which your group can participate. There are many websites that can help you find the right volunteer position based on your interests, skill sets and location.
*Utilize your work skills: Many non-profits need volunteers with professional skills. Board service with a non-profit is another meaningful way to share your expertise to help address community needs.
*Learn more about your volunteering policies and opportunities through your workplace: Ask your company if it’s planning any volunteer activities. If it’s not, offer to coordinate one. Remind your company of all the great benefits of volunteering and ask about any special programs it might have for employees who volunteer. Set goals and keep track of your efforts. You’ll be surprised how they can add up collectively.
Take an active role in helping our community thrive. Without volunteers, many organizations couldn’t continue doing the good work that makes Kansas City the wonderful place it is.
