Villegas gana el premio a la Latina Sobresaliente
Desde niña, Miriam Villegas ha trabajado para superar las dificultades.
Esa determinación pudo haberle ayudado a ganar el premio de Dos Mundos a la Latina Sobresaliente por su compromiso y servicio a la comunidad – junto con su amor por el fútbol.
Nacida en la Ciudad de México, Villegas llegó como inmigrante indocumentada a los 12 años. En su infancia, tuvo que trabajar para ayudar a su familia a superar las dificultades económicas.
“Mi primer trabajo fue en la fábrica de costura de mis padres”, indicó Villegas. “No podía ir a la universidad …. cuando terminé la preparatoria, mis hermanos y yo tuvimos que trabajar con mis padres. Desafortunadamente, el negocio no funcionó y mis padres tuvieron que declararse en bancarrota y nos enfrentamos a situaciones muy difíciles. “
Villegas se mudó con uno de sus hermanos a Arizona, donde trabajó durante un año. Cuando su padre tuvo una nueva oportunidad en el área de Kansas City, la familia decidió mudarse.
“Cuando estaba en Arizona, tomé buenas decisiones», mencionó. “Compré mi coche. Luego, mis padres vinieron y me dijeron que teníamos que mudarnos a Kansas City. “
Villegas y su familia comenzaron a trabajar en La Tiendita en Kansas City. Su hermano Raúl comenzó como socio de negocios con su padre. Villegas era jefa. Luego, tuvo la oportunidad de tener su propia tienda. Ella persiguió esa oportunidad uniéndose a su hermano Raúl, más conocido como “El Padrino”. Al combinar sus talentos, nació Soccer Nation.
“Recuerdo cuando mi hermano me dijo: ‘Te gusta el fútbol, te encanta el fútbol, vamos a hacer esto’.”, indicó Villegas.
Además de trabajar en Soccer Nation, Villegas trabaja para La Chiquita Market y la tienda de fútbol El Padrino. Sus labores incluyen la supervisión de empleados, finanzas, logística y la escuela para los niños de Soccer Nation.
“Me encanta mi trabajo”, indicó Villegas. “No lo veo como un trabajo. Amo el fútbol y trabajar con los niños en Soccer Nation me hace feliz. Las cosas pequeñas son lo que importan y esas cosas hacen mi día. “
Villegas está emocionada de que su amor por el fútbol y sus logros personales le han permitido el recibir el Premio a la Latina Sobresaliente.
«Es un privilegio», mencionó. “Es importante ser reconocido. Me siento muy feliz y honrada.”
Villegas recibirá el premio el 23 de marzo en el Centro de Arte Mattie Rhodes en Kansas City, Mo.

Villegas wins Outstanding Latina Award

Since childhood, Miriam Villegas has worked to overcome hardships.
That drive might’ve helped her earn the Dos Mundos Outstanding Latina Award for her commitment and service to the community – along with her love for soccer.
Born in Mexico City, Villegas arrived as an undocumented immigrant in the United States at age 12. As a child, she had to work to help her family overcome economic hardships.
“My first job was at my parents’ sewing factory,” Villegas said. “I couldn’t go to college…. When I finished high school, my brothers and I had to work with my parents. Unfortunately, the business didn’t work (out) and my parents had to file (for) bankruptcy and we faced very difficult situations.”
Villegas moved with one of her brothers to Arizona, where she worked for a year. When her father got a new opportunity in the Kansas City area, the family decided to move.
“When I was in Arizona, I made good decisions,” she said. “I bought my car. And then, my parents came and told me we had to move to Kansas City.”
Villegas and her family started working at La Tiendita in Kansas City. Her brother Raul started as a business partner with her dad. Villegas was an employer. Then, she got the opportunity to own her own store. She pursued that opportunity by joining her brother Raul, better known as “El Padrino.” By combining their talents, Soccer Nation was born.
“I remember when my brother Raul told me: ‘You like soccer, you love soccer, let’s do this,’ ” Villegas said.
In addition to working at Soccer Nation, Villegas works for La Chiquita Market and the soccer store El Padrino. Her duties include overseeing employees, finances, logistics and the Soccer Nation Academy for children.
“I love my job,” Villegas said. “I don’t see it as a job. I love soccer, and working with (the) children in Soccer Nation makes me happy. Little, small things are what matter –and those things just make my day.”
Villegas is thrilled her love for soccer and her personal accomplishments have resulted in her receiving the Outstanding Latina Award.
“It is a privilege,” she said. “It is great being recognized. I feel very happy and honored.”
Villegas will receive the award on March 23 at the Mattie Rhodes Art Center in Kansas City, Mo.
