Desde 1993, Viviana Medellín ha traído el espíritu Tejano a los residentes del área de Kansas City.
Medellín lo ha hecho como anfitriona de un programa de radio Tejano en KKFI-FM (90.1). Ella ha desarrollado un enorme seguimiento de los latinos en el área.
“El enfoque del programa es llevar entretenimiento a la comunidad latina, y esa es la música tejana, ya que no hay ningún otro programa de radio en la zona que les traiga ese tipo de música,” ella afirmó.
La ciudadana de Kansas City – quien se jubiló en el 2015 del St. Luke’s Hospital, donde trabajó en el centro de rehabilitación cardíaca – dedica su tiempo a ofrecer entretenimiento en las tardes a través de la música tejana. Como parte de su trabajo detrás de escena para su espectáculo, Medellín ha visitado San Antonio para conocer a artistas de la grabación – de quienes su música ella toca – para adquirir conocimiento sobre sus carreras. A menudo, se ha ofrecido a comprar su música. Artistas con los que ha hablado han incluido a Rubén Ramos, Little Joe y Jay Pérez.
“Me gusta tocar la música para ellos (latinos),” dijo Medellín. “Me gusta cuando hablo con la gente de la comunidad. Les encanta escuchar la música. Ellos disfrutan del tipo de música que toco.”
Este mes de junio marcará el 24 aniversario del espectáculo de Medellín. Ella cayó en el mundo de la radio a través de un conocido que trabajó en KKFI. Una oportunidad se le presentó para ser una anfitriona de la radio – y Medellín rápidamente adoptó su nuevo papel en la radio local junto a su amigo y co-anfitrión Manny Martínez, quien se retiró recientemente después de 23 años.
“Mi pasión es mi música tejana – y ser DJ (disc jockey) en la radio,” dijo Medellín.
La pasión de Medellín por llevar entretenimiento a los latinos se extiende a su posición como encargada del entretenimiento (entertainment chair) para la Fiesta Hispana. Ha ayudado a organizar el evento anual durante cuatro años.
“Con mi conocimiento en entretenimiento en música, he sido a menudo (responsable de) el entretenimiento que les gusta tener en Kansas City,” dijo Medellín. “Y con mi conocimiento de los artistas y artistas de la grabación, podemos comunicarnos y hablar de actuaciones en Kansas City y en Fiesta Hispana.”

Medellin celebrating 24 years of bringing Tejano music to KC

Since 1993, Viviana Medellin has brought the Tejano spirit to Kansas City area residents.
Medellin has done so as the host of a Tejano radio show on KKFI-FM (90.1). She has developed a huge following from area Latinos.
“The focus of the show is to bring entertainment to the Latino community – that being Tejano music, which there is no other radio show in the area that will bring that kind of music to them,” she stated.
The Kansas City native – who retired in 2015 from St. Luke’s Hospital, where she worked at the cardiac rehab center – dedicates her time to presenting evening entertainment to the masses through playing Tejano music. As part of her behind-the-scenes work for her show, Medellin has visited San Antonio to meet recording artists – whose music she plays – to gain knowledge about their careers. Often, she has offered to purchase their music. Artists she has talked with have included Ruben Ramos, Little Joe and Jay Perez.
“I enjoy playing the music for them (Latinos),” Medellin said. “I enjoy (it) when I talk to the people in the community. They love to hear the music. They enjoy the type of music that I play.”
This June will mark the 24th anniversary of Medellin’s show. She fell into the world of radio through an acquaintance who worked at KKFI. An opportunity was presented to her to be a radio host – and Medellin quickly embraced her new role in local radio alongside friend and co-host Manny Martinez, who retired recently after 23 years.
“My passion is my Tejano music – and being the DJ (disc jockey) on the radio,” Medellin stated.
Medellin’s passion for bringing entertainment to Latinos extends to her position as entertainment chair for Fiesta Hispana. She has helped stage the annual event for four years.
“With my knowledge in entertainment in music, I have often been (responsible for) the entertainment that they would like to have in Kansas City,” Medellin said. “And with my knowledge of entertainers and recording artists, we can communicate and talk about performances in Kansas City and at Fiesta Hispana.”
