Lisa Lopez está dedicada a por lo menos dos cosas: su trabajo y ser voluntaria para ayudar a la comunidad de cualquier manera que pueda.
El trabajo de Lopez es con The Kansas City Star. Iniciando en 1981 como empleada en la sala de redacción cuando se graduó de preparatoria, Lopez ha ascendido para convertirse en asistente administrativa para el redactor y vice-presidente.
“Básica-mente soy la única asistente adminis-trativa que queda en la sala de redacción. Yo colaboro a diario con todos en la sala de redacción – repor-teros, redac-tores.”
Como voluntaria, Lopez ha dedicado horas – y muchos años – de su tiempo trabajando con diferentes organizaciones para organizar eventos recaudadores de fondos y apoyar buenas causas.
“Probablemente he recaudado más de $300,000 con las diferentes organizaciones con las que he trabajado en mi vida”, declaró Lopez.
Uno de los papeles de Lopez es como secretaria en el Comité de Herencia Hispana. Ella ha participado con el Comité por casi 12 años. Lopez empezó ayudando con “La Fiesta”, la cual organiza el Comité, y con el tiempo empezó a participar de manera formal.
Cada año, Lopez ayuda a organizar de dos a tres eventos recaudadores de fondos para ayudar a financiar “La Fiesta”. El evento anual de tres días es gratis para el público -y Lopez y su equipo trabajan cada año para asegurar que se mantenga de esa manera. Algunas de las otras responsabilidades de Lopez incluyen estar a cargo de los vendedores, medios de comunicación y alguna publicidad.
“También estoy en la directiva de Mujeres Ejecutivas Internacionales (MEI) – también a cargo de recaudar fondos en ese comité. Ayudo a realizar los eventos recaudadores de fondos y esas recaudaciones van hacia fondos de becas para estudiantes locales de preparatoria”, dijo Lopez.
La dedicación de Lopez no se detiene allí. Ella también ha colaborado en la directiva de Guadalupe Centers, Inc. por aproximadamente 11 años. Además, ella estuvo entre las mujeres principales que ayudaron a iniciar el Fondo de Beca Olivia Raya. Debido a que ella conocía a la madre de Raya, Lopez intentó ayudar en cualquier manera que ella pudiera. Y cuando su único hijo estaba más pequeño, Lopez ayudó a recaudar fondos para el grupo de baile hispano el Grupo Atotonilco.
“(Lo que más disfruto de mi trabajo como voluntaria es) toda la gente que he conocido”, declaró Lopez. “Conozco a tanta gente con todo tipo de estilos de vida y solamente tener la satisfacción de ayudar a alguien en necesidad -eso que sientes que has ayudado a alguien más cuando necesitan ayuda -(es lo máximo)”.

Lopez demonstrates passion through volunteer work

Lisa Lopez is devoted to at least two things: her job and volunteering to help the community however she can.
Lopez’s job is with The Kansas City Star. Starting in 1981 as a newsroom clerk when she graduated from high school, Lopez has risen through the ranks to become the administrative assistant to the editor and vice president.
“I’m basically the only administrative assistant left in the newsroom,” Lopez said. “I serve everyone in the newsroom – reporters, editors – on a day-to-day basis.”
As a volunteer, Lopez has dedicated hours – and many years – of her time, working with various organizations to organize fundraisers and support good causes.
“I’ve probably raised more than $300,000 with the different organizations I’ve worked with in my lifetime,” Lopez stated.
One of Lopez’s roles is as secretary on the Hispanic Heritage Committee. She has been involved with the committee for almost 12 years. Lopez started out by helping with La Fiesta, which the committee hosts, and gradually became formally involved.
Lopez helps organize two to three fundraisers each year to help fund La Fiesta. The three-day annual event is free to the public – and Lopez and her team work each year to ensure it stays that way. Some of Lopez’s other responsibilities include being in charge of vendors, media and some advertising.
“I’m also on the board for Executive Women International (EMI) – in charge of fundraising on that committee also,” Lopez said. “I help put on fundraisers and those proceeds go toward scholarship funds for local high school kids.”
Lopez’s dedication doesn’t stop there. She also has served on the Guadalupe Centers Inc.’s board for approximately 11 years. In addition, she was among the core women who helped start the Olivia Raya Scholarship Fund. Because she knew Raya’s mother, Lopez attempted to help in any way she could. And when her only son was younger, Lopez helped raise funds for the Hispanic dance troupe El Grupo Atotonilco.
“(What I enjoy most about my volunteer work is) all the people that I’ve met,” Lopez stated. “I know so many people from all walks of nature. And just feeling the satisfaction of helping somebody in need – just that feeling you’ve helped somebody else when they need help – (is the best thing).”
