Durante varios años, miles de fanáticos del fútbol de la zona de Kansas City presenciaron a Diego Gutiérrez desempeñar lo que se ha denominado como “un hermoso juego”.
Ahora, Gutiérrez espera que los miles de aficionados al fútbol de habla hispana de la zona de Kansas City lo escuchen, hablar sobre ello.
Gutiérrez, quien jugó en la MLS para los Kansas City Wizards (ahora Sporting Kansas City) y el Chicago Fire antes de retirarse en 2008, comenzó a trabajar como analista para las transmisiones en español de los partidos de Sporting Kansas City. El colombiano está ofreciendo sus conocimientos a ESPN Deportes Kansas City (1480 AM), que tiene una asociación con Reyes Media Group, editorial de Dos Mundos.
«Creo que hay una oportunidad única para desarrollar una cultura de oyentes en el público de habla hispana en Kansas City y sus alrededores…, con el fútbol siendo parte de eso», indicó Gutiérrez el lunes (20 de marzo) en la tarde por teléfono . «Así que estoy emocionado … de ser parte de ese crecimiento, y espero que no sólo sea la expansión del deporte, sino también de la marca ESPN Deportes y La Gran D (1340 AM, otra estación de Reyes Media). Estoy muy emocionado por el 2017.»
Otra razón que emociona a Gutiérrez es que el trabajo le permitirá ampliar su curriculum de periodismo en radio y televisión.
«Narré en partidos para ESPN (por algún tiempo en) televisión», mencionó. «Hice partidos para Telemundo. Realicé partidos para Fox Sports 1. Era un analista de Fox Sports 1. También para Sporting KC (TV). Así que tengo amplia experiencia en televisión. Pero este año, el tener la oportunidad de hacer radio y trabajar con los chicos con los que estoy trabajando, es una nueva aventura».
Gutiérrez balancea su «nueva aventura» con sus otras responsabilidades. Estas abarcan el ser un hombre de familia, empresario, maestro y estudiante graduado. También incluyen su campaña para conseguir un lugar en el consejo escolar.
«La única manera en la que se trabajar es … realizando muchas actividades», indicó. «No soy uno de esos tipos que …, al retirarse como jugador, se sientan y juegan golf en algún lugar de Florida. Así no soy…. Continúo empujando los límites y aumentando la exigencia».

Gutierrez lending voice, insight to Spanish-language SKC radio broadcasts

For several years, thousands of Kansas City area soccer fans saw Diego Gutierrez play what has been dubbed “the beautiful game.”
Now, Gutierrez is hoping thousands of Kansas City area Spanish-speaking soccer fans will hear him comment on it.
Gutierrez – who played in MLS for the Kansas City Wizards (nee the Kansas Wiz, now Sporting Kansas City) and the Chicago Fire before retiring in 2008 – recently began working as the color commentator for Spanish broadcasts of Sporting Kansas City games. The native Colombian is providing his insights on ESPN Deportes Kansas City (1480 AM), which has a partnership with Reyes Media Group, publisher of Dos Mundos.
“For the Spanish-speaking audience in Kansas City and surrounding vicinities, I think there’s a unique opportunity to sort of develop a culture of listeners …, (with) soccer being part of that,” Gutierrez said Monday afternoon (March 20) by phone. “So I’m excited … (about) being part of that growth – and hopefully, not only expanding the sport, but also the brand that ESPN Deportes and La Gran D (1340 AM, another Reyes Media station) as well…. I’m really excited about 2017.”
Another reason for Gutierrez’s excitement is because the job allows him to expand his broadcast journalism résumé.
“I did games for ESPN (for a time on) television),” he said. “I did games for Telemundo. I did games for Fox Sports 1. I was a business analyst for Fox Sports 1. I was the (TV) color commentator for Sporting KC. So I have an extensive background on television. But this year, I think, getting the opportunity to do radio and working with the guys I’m working (with), it’s a new adventure.”
Gutierrez is juggling his “new adventure” with his other responsibilities. They include being a family man, business owner, teacher and graduate student. They also include campaigning for a school board seat.
“The only way I know how to do things is … by having a lot of activities and a lot of things going on,” he said. “I’m not one of those guys that …, upon retiring as a player, was going to sit and play golf somewhere in Florida. That’s not me…. I continue to push the limits and raise the bar.”
