Diversos medios de comunicación reportan que la organización de derechos humanos Amnistía Internacional está preocupada por Joaquín Guzmán Loera – alias “El Chapo” – debido a sus condiciones de vida en el Centro Correccional Metropolitano de Nueva York.
De acuerdo a los informes de la prensa, “El Chapo” pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo en confinamiento solitario y no ve la luz del día. El narcotraficante, que fue extraditado de México a Estados Unidos a principios de año, ha sido limitado en el acceso de visitantes y realiza muy poco ejercicio.
Justin Mazzola, subdirector de investigación de la Amnistía Internacional, envió una carta a la Oficina del Fiscal del distrito este de Nueva York, pidiendo al gobierno que compruebe las condiciones de vida de “El Chapo”. En la carta, Amnistía Internacional solicitó que visitara a Guzmán Loera en prisión.
“Nos preocupa que las condiciones impuestas al señor Guzmán Loera sean innecesariamente severas e incumplan los estándares internacionales para el trato humano”, indicó Mazzola citando al periódico El Yucatan Times.
Según la CBS, “El Chapo” sufre de un trastorno de ansiedad que comenzó en México y que ha empeorado en los Estados Unidos.
Al cierre de esta edición, la Oficina del Fiscal del distrito este de Nueva York no había comentado al respecto.

Amnesty International concerned about “El Chapo”

Several news outlets are reporting that the human rights organization Amnesty International is concerned about Joaquin Guzman Loera – a.k.a. “El Chapo” – because of his living conditions at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City.
According to news reports, “El Chapo” spends most of his time in solitary confinement and doesn’t see daylight. The drug lord, who was extradited from Mexico to the United States at the beginning of the year, also reportedly has limited access to visitors and gets limited exercise.
Justin Mazzola, Amnesty International deputy director of research, has sent a letter to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, asking the office to check on “El Chapo’s” living conditions. In the letter, Amnesty International requested to visit Guzman Loera in prison.
“We are concerned that the conditions imposed on Mr. Guzman Loera appear to be unnecessarily harsh and to breach international standards for human treatment,” Mazzola was quoted by the newspaper El Yucatan Times as saying.
According to CBS, “El Chapo” is suffering from an anxiety disorder that started in Mexico and has worsened in the United States.
At press time, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York hadn’t issued any comments on the matter.
