The basic requirements to become a US Citizen is to have been a Legal Permanent Resident (green card holder) for at least five years. If you are married to a US Citizen, you only have to be a LPR for three years. You have to have lived in the United States during most of that time, with no trips over six months. The government also wants to see that you are a good person during that time. Make sure you have filed your income taxes and paid any child support due. If you have criminal issues at all, you should definitely talk to an attorney to see if it is time to file for citizenship.
Many people delay their citizenship process because they are worried about the interview. Generally, an applicant must speak basic English, read and write one sentence in English and answer 10 questions about American history. The test is not very hard, however many, if not most of our clients qualify not to take these tests. Applicants automatically qualify to do the interview (and history test) in their native language if they are 50 years old and have been residents for 20 years or they are 55 years old and have had their residency for 15 years. Alternatively, if there is a medical problem that prevents the applicant from learning English and/or American history, the tests can be avoided all together. These are difficult times for immigrants. It is very important to move to US citizenship as a protection for yourself and your family members.
