Welcome tourists, in this edition we have to talk about the historic Peruvian sanctuary known as Machu Picchu, which in Spanish means “old mountain,” located 68 miles northeast of Cusco, Peru. It is part of the central mountain area of the Peruvian Andes. Machu Picchu is an ancient Inca city built in the fifteenth century, possibly at the request of the then Inca ruler Pachacutec. It’s divided into two large sectors: the agricultural that is divided into a vast network of artificial terraces and urban, consisting of various buildings and plazas. Among those that stand out are the Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Three Windows, the Main Temple and the Temple of the Condor.
Now, what is special about this sanctuary? First of all it is a city surrounded by temples, platforms and water channels, built on the top of a mountain. Thanks to its strategic location, between mountains, it was not discovered by the Spanish at the time of their invasion. Since 1983, the entire region was named as cultural and natural heritage of humanity by the UNESCO. In 2007 it was declared as one of the new seven wonders of the world.
You will be asking, how do I get there? The first thing you should do is buy your flight directly to the city of Cusco, since it is the closest of the main cities. Round flights from Kansas and some of the main cities of the United States range from $650 to $1,200. Once you arrive to the city of Cusco, you can stay in one of its hotels, which prices goes from $20 to $200 approximately per night.
In order to reach the sanctuary it is necessary to first reach the town of Aguas Calientes, now also known as the Machu Picchu town. There are mainly 3 ways to do it, which are detailed below:
The easiest and fastest way to get there is by train. With a journey of about 3 hours and a price between $140 and $ 200 for a round trip. When you get to the town you can climb a road to the citadel which you can do in around 2 and a half hours. Or if you do not like to walk or want to get there faster, you can take one of the buses that leave the town and that cost approximately $25 for a round trip. And to get there it takes you about 15 minutes, to this we must add that the admission to the sanctuary which is $45. This option, like the others that I will discuss below, can only be done with agencies authorized by the Peruvian government. Since the sanctuary has a daily limit of 500 people per day, I recommend you plan and buy your tickets at least 6 months in advance.
The second option, but no less pleasant, is walking along the Inca trail. If you like long walks through nature, this is an excellent option and in fact the most popular. It’s about going along the old path that the people of Machu Picchu used to reach the citadel. This option takes between 4 and 5 days and 3 or 4 nights walking through the nearby mountains of the area. The price of this tour goes from $500 to $900 depending on the date of the year in which you attend.
The third option is by far the most extreme and most adventurous. Just as the previous one is about trekking along the old Inca trail. But in this case you will also make hikes on the train tracks to get to the hydroelectric from the village, cross from one mountain to another on zip lines, rafting, mountain biking, night walks and much more. The ride lasts 4 days and 3 nights. You sleep in hostels in the towns of Santa María, Santa Teresa and Machu Picchu town, also includes all meals and most of the activities mentioned above. The price goes from $300 to $600, but it will also depend on the date in which you choose to make your trip.
With all this information you don’t have excuses to not get excited about discovering this wonderful place. Go to the adventure, greetings and a have good trip.
Conoce Machu Picchu
Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar del histórico santuario peruano conocido como Machu Picchu, que en castellano significa “montaña vieja”, el cual está ubicado 68 millas al noreste de Cusco, Perú. Forma parte de la cordillera central de los de los andes peruanos. Machu Picchu es una antigua ciudad inca construida en el siglo XV posiblemente a petición del entonces gobernante inca Pachacútec, está dividida en dos grandes sectores: el agrícola que está dividido en una vasta red de terrazas artificiales y el urbano, formado por diversas construcciones y plazas entre las que más destacan el Templo del Sol, Templo de las Tres Ventanas, el Templo Principal y el Templo del cóndor.
Ahora bien, ¿qué tiene de especial este santuario? Primero que nada es una ciudad rodeada de templos, andenes y canales de agua, construida en lo más alto de una montaña, gracias a su estratégica ubicación entre montañas no fue descubierta por los españoles al momento de su invasión. Desde 1983 la UNESCO nombró patrimonio cultural y natural de la humanidad a toda la región. En 2007 fue declarada como una de las nuevas siete maravillas del mundo.
Te estarás preguntando ¿cómo le hago para llegar? Lo primero que deberás hacer es comprar tu vuelo directamente a la ciudad de Cusco, ya que es la ciudad importante más cercana, los vuelos redondos desde Kansas y algunas de las principales ciudades de Estados Unidos van desde los $650 hasta los $1,200, una vez llegando a la ciudad de Cusco, te puedes hospedar en alguno de sus hoteles, los cuales tienen costos desde los $20 hasta los $200 aproximadamente por noche.
Para poder llegar al santuario es necesario forzosamente llegar primero al pueblo de Aguas Calientes ahora también conocido como Machu Picchu pueblo, existen principalmente 3 formas de hacerlo, las cuales las detallo a continuación:
La forma más sencilla y rápida de llegar es en tren, con un recorrido de al rededor de 3 horas y un costo de entre $140 y $200 redondo, llegando al pueblo puedes subir por un camino hasta la ciudadela la cual entre subida y bajada de la misma puedes hacer al rededor de 2 horas y media o bien si no te gusta caminar o quieres llegar más rápido puedes tomar uno de los autobuses que salen del pueblo y que tienen un costo aproximado de $25 de ida y vuelta y que tardas en llegar al rededor de 15 minutos, a esto le debemos agregar el costo de entrada al santuario que es de $45. Esta opción al igual que las demás que te comentaré a continuación únicamente las puedes realizar con agencias autorizadas por el gobierno peruano ya que el santuario tiene un límite diario de visitas de 500 personas por lo que te recomiendo que planees con al menos 6 meses de anticipación y compres tus boletos.
La segunda opción pero no por eso menos agradable es caminando por el camino inca, si te gustan las largas caminatas a través de la naturaleza esta es una excelente opción y de hecho la más popular, se trata de ir a lo largo del antiguo camino que utilizaban los pobladores de Machu Picchu para llegar a la ciudadela. Esta opción se lleva a lo largo de entre 4 y 5 días y 3 o 4 noches caminando por las montañas cercanas de la cordillera. El costo de este recorrido va desde los $500 hasta los $900 dependiendo de la fecha del año en la que asistas.
La tercer opción es por mucho la más extrema y más plagada de aventuras, al igual que la anterior se trata de hacer trekking por el antiguo camino inca, pero en este caso además de eso realizarás caminatas sobre las vías del tren para llegar a la hidroeléctrica del pueblo, atravesar de una montaña a otra sobre tirolesas, realizar rafting, bicicleta de montaña, paseos nocturno y mucho más. El paseo dura 4 días y 3 noches, duermes en hostales en los pueblos de Santa María, Santa Teresa y Machu Picchu pueblo, incluye además todas las comidas y la mayoría de las actividades anteriormente mencionadas, el costo va desde los $300 hasta los $600, el costo también dependerá de la fecha en la cual decidas realizar tu viaje.
