Members of the U.S. Senate announced Wednesday (Feb. 7) they had reached a bipartisan, two-year budget agreement – an agreement they hope will avoid the second federal government shutdown in less than a month.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, said the spending bill would need some tweaking, but assured that “all the principles of the agreement are in place.” Senate Majority Leader and Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell, who repeatedly called the spending bill “fair to all sides,” said the legislation would address such issues as veteran care services, infrastructure work, disaster relief and combatting the national opioid epidemic.
“We worked hard to find common ground to serve the American people,” McConnell said during a televised speech, carried live from the Senate chamber.
But as CNN reporter Wolf Blitzer stated, the agreement is “by no means, a done deal yet.” The bill must pass in the House of Representatives and be approved by President Trump.
In related news, Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi is expressing reservations about the proposal. As multiple news agencies have reported, Pelosi has said she won’t approve the agreement unless House Speaker Paul Ryan agrees to a House debate on immigration reform – specifically, to address the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The assistance program for the children of undocumented immigrants is scheduled to end in March.
The government is scheduled to shut down on midnight Thursday (Feb. 8) if agreement isn’t reached by then. It would be the second government shutdown under the Trump administration – the first being a three-day shutdown that took place in January.
