Robots are putting human jobs at risk

Analysis by Tere Siqueira

The field of robotics could potentially become the most disruptive technological change to human life since the Industrial Revolution.
The reason for this is artificial intelligence. For now, artificial intelligence is designed to perform narrow tasks. But the long-term goal for many researchers is to create technology that will outperform humans at nearly every cognitive task.
Some of the jobs that humans might soon lose because of artificial intelligence and robotics include the following:
*Cashiers and toll booth operators: According to a study from the Cornerstone Capital Group, around 7.5 million human jobs are at risk of being lost to automation in the next decade. Many stores have already installed self-checkout systems, including CVS, Walmart and Starbucks. Those positions will add to the many human jobs that have been already reduced with the emergence of online shopping.
*Professional drivers: Car and tech companies are investing billions to build self-driving cars. When cars and trucks can drive themselves, there won’t be a need to hire humans to drive them. Author Vivek Wadhwa, an expert on the topic, estimates that about 5 million driving jobs done by humans will be lost in the early 2020s. Cabdriving, bus driving, package delivery and tractor-trailer driving jobs are among the jobs done by humans that could soon disappear.
*Fast food cooks and servers: McDonalds and Wendy’s have added automated touch-screen systems that allow customers to create their own burgers without interacting with another human being. And fast food company executives have stated that it’s cheaper to invest in robotic tools than it is to hire employees. For this reason, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics has estimated that 80,000 fast food jobs will disappear by 2024.
*Factory workers: According to experts, the more repetitive a job is, the more likely it’ll soon be done by robots. In most factories, workers could be replaced by robots because the skills required to do their jobs are low and the tasks are repetitive. To achieve higher profits and efficiency, robots are becoming the perfect labor choice for factory owners.
