Welcome tourists! In this edition, we will talk about the third largest city in our beautiful country. Known by many as “the second city” but more famously known as “the city of winds”, we are talking about Chicago. The third most populated city in the USA, only behind NY and LA. According to Spanish explorers of the seventeenth century, there was already a population of Potawatomis Indians who claimed the land with the name “Eschikagou”.
In October 1871, a catastrophe is known as “the Great Fire of Chicago” took place. In that event, the fire destroyed more than 4 miles of the city, where it also left at least 200 dead and 100,000 homeless. Nearly 18,000 buildings were destroyed and it was a loss of close to 200 million dollars at the time. But after that, an even bigger Chicago was reconstructed than the previous one with the intervention of architects of international fame.
Flights to Chicago departing from Kansas have an average price of $ 240. If you travel with your family I advise you to analyze the option of traveling by car, which you can do in an average of 8 hours and you can save a considerable amount of money. In terms of accommodation, you can find hostels with shared rooms for $70 per night, while 3-star hotels have an average price of $180. If we talk about mobility within the city, the best option is to travel on foot or by public transportation, either on its train lines or on its buses with prices close to $2.5 per trip. Since being a first world and busy city you can waste a lot of time in traffic as well as have to pay significant amounts of money in parking your vehicle. Speaking of food, Chicago has 23 Michelin stars among its most famous restaurants. It is undoubtedly known for having one of the most coarse cuisines in the country, so you can try food from a wide variety of regions of the world. All of its options of high quality, the average price of a meal at a mid-range restaurant is $25, do not miss to try their traditional Chicago-style pizza.
Moving to the most interesting side, I’ll give you a brief description of some of the city’s must-see spots:
Willis Tower, famously known as the Sears Tower, is the tallest skyscraper in all of Chicago. It is 443 meters high and has 110 floors, for many years was the tallest building in the world and until a few years ago the tallest building from all USA. The most interesting thing about visiting this building is that it has in its main attraction viewpoints in the form of a balcony with a glass floor. You can see the whole city from 412 meters high, making you feel practical that you fly at that altitude. If you like this kind of attractions I advise you to visit the viewpoint of the John Hancock Center, which at 300 meters high. What makes it unique is that when looking through its windows you must hold with both hands a couple of bars. The metal windows and the glass windows lean outwards, being slightly reclined on the floor, having an invaluable view of the city.
Lake Michigan, one of the 5 Great Lakes of North America, is surrounded by the states of Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Indiana. The size of the lake is similar to the size of the country of Croatia. Making it one of the largest in the world, and the largest belonging to a single country, since the others belong to at least 2 different countries. Take a boat trip, not only for such a beautiful lake but also so you can enter the Chicago, which crosses much of the city. Over the water, you can have an enviable view of the architecture of some of the most important buildings in Chicago. The walks are usually 1 hour and a half with an average price of $ 35, I advice you to go prepared. When you leave, the wind in the lake is extremely strong and your skin can get burned because of the cold water.
The Millennium Park, undoubtedly one of the main points of interest within the city, belongs to the largest and most important park in the city. Grant Park, among its main attractions, is the Gate of the Cloud, a gigantic Drop of stainless steel that reflects mainly the big skyscrapers of the city. And also because of its structure depending on the angle from which you look, you will be reflected in different fun shapes, take advantage and take pictures of these unique shapes. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion, a modern stage that makes you remember the ancient amphitheaters but at the same time with the great modernism of the time. Here you can enjoy classical music concerts totally free. The Lurien Garden enhances an artistic expression with different vegetation, to show the urban change from the old Chicago to the modern style. McCormick Tribune Park is a multipurpose pavilion, which is used mainly in winter as it becomes a huge ice skating rink.
If you are planning to visit several of its museums and attractions, I advise you to value the option to buy the Go Chicago card or the City pass, since with them you can get great discounts. Conoce Chicago
Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de la tercera ciudad más grande de nuestro bello país, conocida por muchos como “la segunda ciudad” pero más famosamente conocida como “la ciudad de los vientos”, así es viajeros, nos referimos a Chicago. La tercera ciudad más poblada de todo EE.UU. Sólo por detrás de NY y LA. Según exploradores españoles del siglo XVII ya existía una población de indios Potawatomis que reclamaban la tierra con el nombre “Eschikagou”.
En octubre de 1871 ocurrió una catástrofe conocida como “el Gran Incendio de Chicago”, en dicho suceso el fuego arrasó con más de 4 millas de la ciudad, donde además dejó por lo menos 200 muertos y 100,000 habitantes sin hogar. Se destruyeron cerca de 18,000 edificaciones y fue una pérdida cercana a $200 millones de dólares de la época. Pero después de eso se reconstruyó un Chicago aún más grande que el anterior con la intervención de arquitectos de fama internacional.
Los vuelos con destino a Chicago partiendo desde Kansas tienen un costo promedio de $240, si viajas con tu familia te recomiendo que analices la opción de viajar en automóvil, el cual lo puedes realizar en un promedio de 8 horas, verás que te puedes ahorrar una cantidad considerable de dinero. En cuestión de hospedaje podrás encontrar hostales con habitaciones compartidas por $70 la noche, mientras que los hoteles 3 estrellas tienen un costo promedio de $180 por noche. Si hablamos de movilidad dentro de la ciudad la mejor opción es viajar a pie o en transporte público, ya sea en sus líneas de tren o en sus autobuses con costos cercanos a los $2.5 por viaje, ya que al ser una ciudad de primer mundo y tan transitada puedes perder mucho tiempo en el tráfico además de tener que pagar cantidades importantes de dinero en estacionamiento de tu vehículo. Hablando de comida, Chicago cuenta con 23 estrellas Michelin entre sus restaurantes más famosos, es conocido sin duda alguna por tener una de las gastronomías más bastas de todo el país, así que podrás probar comida de una gran diversidad de regiones del mundo, todas ellas de altísima calidad, el costo promedio de una comida en un restaurante de gama media es de $25, no te pierdas de probar su tradicional pizza estilo Chicago.
Pasando al lado más interesante, a continuación te doy una ligera descripción de algunos de los puntos imperdibles de la ciudad:

Si esta clase de atracciones son de tu agrado también te recomiendo visites el mirador del John Hancock Center, el cual a 300 metros de altura, lo que lo hace único es que al asomarte por sus ventanas debes sujetarte con ambas manos de un par de barras metálicas y las ventanas de cristal se inclinan hacia afuera quedando ligeramente recostado boca abajo teniendo una vista invaluable de la ciudad.
Lago Michigan, es uno de los 5 Grandes Lagos de Norteamérica, está rodeado por los estados de Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin e Indiana. La dimensión del lago es similar a la del país de Croacia, por lo que lo hace uno de los más grandes en el mundo, y el más grande perteneciente a un sólo país, ya que los otros pertenecen por lo menos a 2 paises distintos. Realiza un paseo en barco, no sólo por tan hermoso lago, sino que además te podrás adentrar por el río Chicago, el cual atraviesa gran parte de la ciudad, así que sobre el agua podrás tener una vista envidiable de la arquitectura de algunos de los principales edificios más importantes de Chicago. Los paseos por lo regular son de 1 hora y media con un costo promedio de $35, te recomiendo que vayas bien abrigado ya que el viento principalmente cuando partas hacia el lago es sumamente fuerte y te pueden llegar a quemar la piel por tanto frío.
El Parque del Milenio, es sin duda uno de los principales puntos de interés dentro de la ciudad, es perteneciente al parque más grande e importante de la ciudad, el Grant Park, entre sus principales atracciones se encuentra la Puerta de la Nube, una gigantesca gota de acero inoxidable que refleja principalmente los grandes rascacielos de la ciudad y que además debido a su estructura dependiendo del ángulo desde que te mires reflejado será la forma en la que tu cuerpo adopte distintos formas divertidas, aprovecha y tómate fotos de estas singulares formas. El Pabellón Jay Pritzker, es un moderno escenario que te hace recordar a los antiguos anfiteatros pero a la vez con gran modernismo de la época, aquí podrás disfrutar de conciertos de música clásica totalmente gratuitos. El Jardín Lurien realza una expresión artística con distintas vegetaciones de Illinois, para mostrar el cambio urbano desde el antiguo Chicago hasta el moderno y actual. McCormick Tribune Park es un pabellón multiusos, el cual es muy usado principalmente en invierno ya que se convierte en una enorme pista de patinaje sobre hielo.
Te recomiendo que valores la opción de comprar la tarjeta Go Chicago o la City pass, ya que con ellas podrás obtener grandísimos descuentos si tu intención es la de visitar varios de sus museos y atracciones.
