Wonderful World: Discover Ciudad Valles

Welcome tourists! In this edition, we will talk about the “Great Gate to the Huasteca Potosina”, one of the most beautiful nature reserves of our neighbor Mexico. We are talking about Ciudad Valles, San Luis Potosí. Founded in 1533 by the Spanish conquistador Nuño de Guzmán, and whose name comes from the Tének language used by indigenous Huaxtecas of the region, which means “place of clouds”.

Few tourists are able to remember this wonderful place by its name, this is because it belongs to the famous Huasteca Potosina. A site comprising 20 municipalities surrounded by natural waterfalls, forests, caves, lakes, and rivers. But thanks to its infrastructure, this is the place that presents the greatest number of hotels, restaurants and tourist services for visitors to the Huasteca. There are a lot of agencies that offer tours throughout the region at a fairly affordable price for the number of places to visit. The average price for a whole weekend tour is around $180, most of these include transportation, accommodation, admission to the parks, rental of equipment for boat rides and sometimes meals. But you can also choose to go on your own vehicle, the advantage of this is that you can focus and spend the time you like on the attractions of your interest. Keep in mind that like this is a natural ecotourism area prices can be higher when paying for them than in a package.

Getting there is a little more complicated than usual, this is because it does not have a nearby international airport. The most convenient route is to travel to the city of Tampico, Tamaulipas, which is 2 hours and a half from there and the price of an average round flight starts from $650. Or you can fly to the state capital, the city of San Luis that is 4 hours away and with average prices of $ 900. If you plan to visit the Huasteca on your own I advise you to rent a vehicle by an average price of $30 per day or if you want to hire one of the many tours in the region I advise you to take a bus from any of those cities for $10. The price of hostels and hotels range from $20 and $80 per night. As for mobility, it is essential to bring a car. Food prices are around $12, I advise you to eat the acamayas, which are a kind of freshwater prawns; cheese filled with cream; tamales zacahuiles that can weigh up to 60 pounds as large.

I describe some of the places you can visit in this wonderful place:

Cultural Center of the Huasteca, in this place you will learn a little more about the indigenous culture of the region. You will find archaeological pieces of Tamohi and Tamtok, the archaeological sites that were inhabited from 600 a.c to 1500 d.c.

Cascadas de Micos, a set of 7 stepped waterfalls, which give rise to the formation of crystalline ponds. This is an ideal place to do rappel, swim in the waterfalls, do kayak rides, rafting, diving, mountain biking, among many other activities. These are only 30 minutes from the city.

Aquismón has the main tourist attractions of the Huasteca. Starting with one of the 13 Wonders of Mexico, the “Sótano de las Golondrinas”, it is one of the most beautiful and deep abysses in the world. It has a depth of 512 meters, where thousands of birds have their home and make it an amazing show every time they leave it in spiral formations. Also here is Tamul, the most beautiful and important waterfall of San Luis Potosí, with a height of 105 meters, in this place you can rent a boat from where you can appreciate it closely and enjoy its waters. It is located only 35 miles from Ciudad Valles.

Xilitla is where you will find the famous “Surrealist Garden of Sir Edward James.” A mythical place where the sculptor and poet built his art based on magical symbols, which helps to decorate even more this splendid place that is characterized by its 60 meters high waterfalls and for their exotic vegetation. You can cool off in its pools and walk through its subtle outdoor corridors. It is 56 miles from Ciudad Valles.

In the wonderful place of Tamasopo you will find extraordinary waterfalls that fill large ponds of water where you can also enjoy the beauty of a variety of ecotourism attractions. If you are here you should not miss the Bridge of God, place in where the force of water and the many years of existence carved a cave worthy of the Gods. Located 35 miles from Ciudad Valles.

I hope you are marveled by reading from such a beautiful place and encouraged to take the trip. If you are a nature fanatic you can not miss it. Live the adventure and have a good trip.
