On May 16, President Trump went viral once again.
And once again, he went viral for all the wrong reasons.
This time, the U.S. president referred to some people coming into the United States as “animals.” His comment was made during an immigration discussion at the White House regarding multiple immigration topics. Those topics included so-called sanctuary cities, MS-13 gang members, the federal government’s “catch and release” practice and policies in California regarding the detention of immigrants. Participants included cabinet members, California sheriffs and other elected officials.
“We have people coming into the country – or trying to come in,” Trump said. “And we’re stopping a lot of them. But we’re taking people out of the country.”
“You wouldn’t believe how bad these people are,” the president continued. “These aren’t people. These are animals. And we’re taking them out of the country at a level and at a rate that’s never happened before. And because of the weak laws, they come in fast, we get them, we release them, we get them again, we bring them out. It’s crazy.”
The president’s statement was beyond offensive. It was racist and aggressive.
U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California gave the best response after video of the president’s comments had gone viral. The Democrat tweeted: “Immigrants are not animals.”
“Immigrants are our family and friends, and they make significant contributions to our country,” Feinstein added.
Unsurprisingly, some Trump supporters excused his behavior. They claimed the president wasn’t calling all immigrants “animals” and that the media took the comment out of context. I agree that understanding a comment’s context is crucial before making any type of judgement. However, regardless of the context in which Trump’s comments were said, nobody should refer to a group of people as “animals” – especially not America’s president.
Obviously, President Trump doesn’t realize the amount of influence he has on people’s behavior. Moreover, I’m convinced that one reason so many YouTube videos of people mistreating immigrants and minorities go viral is because this president has made it clear that it’s acceptable behavior.
Mistreating someone else is unacceptable. Don’t let anyone mistreat you for the color of your skin, the language you speak or the religion you practice.
And don’t do it yourself. Don’t mistreat others, such as by making statements that are beyond offensive.
Don’t be like President Trump.

“Los inmigrantes son nuestra familia y amigos, y hacen contribuciones significativas a nuestro país”, agregó Feinstein.
Como era de esperar, algunos partidarios de Trump excusaron su comportamiento. Afirmaron que el Presidente no llamaba a todos los inmigrantes “animales” y que los medios sacaron el comentario fuera de contexto. Estoy de acuerdo en que entender el contexto de un comentario es crucial antes de hacer cualquier tipo de juicio. Sin embargo, independientemente del contexto en el que se dijeron los comentarios de Trump, nadie debería referirse a un grupo de personas como “animales”, especialmente no como Presidente de Estados Unidos.
Obviamente, el presidente Trump no se da cuenta de la cantidad de influencia que tiene en el comportamiento de las personas. Además, estoy convencido de que una razón por la que muchos videos en YouTube de personas que maltratan a inmigrantes y minorías se vuelven virales es porque este Presidente ha dejado en claro que es un comportamiento aceptable. Maltratar a otra persona es inaceptable. No permita que nadie lo maltrate por el color de su piel, el idioma que habla o la religión que practica.
Y no lo hagas tú mismo. No maltrate a los demás, por ejemplo, haciendo declaraciones que sean más ofensivas.
No seas como el presidente Trump.
