President Trump had a great opportunity – and as has been the case with the other great opportunities he’s had during his tenure, he wasted it.
As multiple news agencies reported, on July 24, Trump addressed 4,000 veterans at the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Kansas City, Mo. Instead of glorifying and honoring those great American citizens who fought to defend this country’s freedom, the president gave a speech that resembled a campaign speech.
As expected, President Trump touched on every point his supporters wanted to hear about: illegal immigration, Democrats, the “fake news” media and unfair trade deals. In fact, he didn’t do much to hide the fact he was using the event as his first 2020 presidential campaign stop. He didn’t invite Robert Wilkie, his nominee to run the Department of Veterans Affairs, to the stage. Instead, President Trump invited Joshua Hawley, a GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate, to speak. The candidate didn’t do much more than speak glowingly of the Trump administration before handing back the podium to Trump.
Later, Trump doubled down on his support of Hawley by harshly criticizing Clare McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat who’s serving in the U.S. Senate and will seek re-election in 2020.
And then, the president went on one of his usual rants. He stated that people shouldn’t believe the “crap” from the “fake news” media. Furthermore, the president – sounding more dictator-like than ever – told his listeners they shouldn’t believe the negative news they read and hear about tariffs.
Trump made it sound like the only truths that exist are those that come out of his mouth – and those that support him. Another comment gave me chills and left me worried for this great nation’s future.
“What you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening,” he said.
Sadly, President Trump, people are seeing and reading what’s happening during your time in office. Your wasted opportunity in Kansas City is only one more painful, frightening example.
Otra oportunidad desperdiciada
El Presidente Trump tuvo una gran oportunidad, y como ha sido el caso con otras grandes oportunidades que tuvo durante su mandato, la desperdició.
Como informaron varias agencias de noticias, el 24 de julio, Trump se dirigió a 4.000 veteranos en la convención Veteranos de Guerras Extranjeras en Kansas City, Missouri. En lugar de glorificar y honrar a los grandes ciudadanos estadounidenses que lucharon para defender la libertad de este país, el Presidente pronunció un discurso de campaña.
Como era de esperar, el presidente Trump tocó todos los puntos sobre los que sus partidarios querían oír hablar: inmigración ilegal, demócratas, los medios de comunicación de “noticias falsas” y acuerdos comerciales injustos. De hecho, no hizo mucho para ocultar el hecho de que estaba usando el evento como su primer parada de su campaña presidencial de 2020. No invitó a Robert Wilkie, su candidato para dirigir el Departamento de Asuntos de Veteranos, al escenario. En cambio, el presidente Trump invitó a Joshua Hawley, un candidato republicano para el Senado de los Estados Unidos, a hablar. El candidato no hizo mucho más que hablar brillantemente de la administración Trump antes de devolver el podio a Trump.
Más tarde, Trump redobló su apoyo a Hawley al criticar severamente a Clare McCaskill, una demócrata de Missouri que presta servicio en el Senado de EE. UU. y buscará la reelección en 2020.
Y luego, el Presidente siguió una de sus protestas habituales. Dijo que las personas no deberían creer la “porquería” de los medios de “noticias falsas”. Además, el Presidente -que suena más parecido a un dictador que nunca- les dijo a sus oyentes que no deberían creer las noticias negativas que leen y escuchan sobre los aranceles.
Trump lo hizo parecer que las únicas verdades que existen son las que salen de su boca y las que lo sostienen. Otro comentario que me dio escalofríos y me dejó preocupado por el futuro de esta gran nación.
“Lo que estás viendo y lo que estás leyendo no es lo que está sucediendo”, dijo.
Tristemente, presidente Trump, la gente está viendo y leyendo lo que está pasando durante su tiempo en el cargo. Su oportunidad desperdiciada en Kansas City es sólo un ejemplo más doloroso y aterrador.
