ICE’s raid in Nebraska and Minnesota targets exploitation ring

By Chara

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers recently raided several sites in Nebraska and Minnesota, including a tomato greenhouse, several restaurants, a grain company, a grocery store and a potato processing facility.
News agencies reported that more than 130 people were arrested. Some of the detainees were allegedly part of a gang that exploits people for profit, and engages in acts of fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.
“During this investigation, authorities identified employees who were subject to arrest for immigration violations and were unlawfully working at these businesses,” ICE said in a statement. “These individuals have been illegally residing and working in the United States. They may also have been exploited as part of this alleged criminal conspiracy.”
ICE stated that 17 of those who were arrested were hiring undocumented immigrants. They’re accused of creating an illegal alien workforce, defrauding the U.S. government and creating unfair advantage over their competition.
Agent Tracy J. Cormier stated that the investigation showed that targeted businesses were hiring undocumented workers to “unlawfully line their own pockets by cheating the workers, cheating the taxpayers and cheating their business competitors.”
In addition, ICE believes the 17 suspects were threatening undocumented immigrants who were using fraudulent identification belonging to U.S. citizens.
Some of the undocumented immigrants who were arrested were released the same day on humanitarian grounds. Others who were arrested on immigration violations were transported to a processing facility and placed in removal proceedings.
After the raid, The Omaha World-Herald reported there were protesters outside the Holt County courthouse in Nebraska. The protesters were holding signs that stated, “Separating families is not Nebraska Nice” and “America is for Everyone.”
