A grand jury report in Pennsylvania released Tuesday (Aug. 14) revealed that bishops and other Catholic Church leaders in Pennsylvania covered up child sexual abuse by more than 300 priests over the course of 70 years.
The report covered six of the eight Catholic dioceses in the state and found more than 1,000 identifiable victims. It also said there are likely thousands more victims who were too afraid to come forward or whose records were lost. The New York Times reported that, as of Tuesday, all six dioceses covered in the report had released the names of priests with allegations against them.
The report also condemned church officials for covering up and protecting priests who were abusing children.
“Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all. For decades,” the grand jury wrote.
Instead, the priests followed a “playbook for concealing the truth,” the grand jury said, minimizing the abuse and not informing the community of the real reasons behind removing accused priests. Accused priests were instead moved to other parishes, according to the report.
It’s unlikely the report will lead to new criminal charges or civil lawsuits under current state law because the statute of limitations has expired. Under the current law, the statute of limitations prevents childhood victims from filing civil lawsuits after they turn 30.
The grand jury and Pennsylvania’s attorney general recommended opening a temporary “window” in the statute of limitations to allow older victims to file civil lawsuits. The church has lobbied against any change to the statute.
This isn’t the first time the Catholic Church has faced sexual abuse allegations. Allegations against the religious institution have surfaced over the past 16 years, starting in 2002, when allegations emerged out of Boston.
Moreover, the report comes weeks after the resignation of Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, the former archbishop of Washington, D.C., amid accusations of sexually abusing young priests and seminarians, and minors over several decades.

El informe cubrió seis de las ocho diócesis católicas en el estado y encontró más de 1,000 víctimas identificables. También notó que es probable que haya miles de víctimas que no denunciaron por miedo o cuyos registros se perdieron. El periódico The New York Times reportó que, hasta el martes, todas las seis diócesis cubiertas en el reporte habían divulgado los nombres de los sacerdotes con acusaciones contra ellos.

Es poco probable que el informe genere nuevas acusaciones penales o demandas civiles bajo la ley estatal actual porque el estatuto de limitaciones ha expirado. Según la ley actual, el estatuto de limitaciones impide que las víctimas de infancia presenten demandas civiles después de cumplir 30 años.
El gran jurado y el fiscal general de Pennsylvania recomendó abrir una “ventana” temporal en el estatuto de limitaciones para permitir que las víctimas mayores puedan presentar demandas civiles. La Iglesia ha presionado en contra de cualquier cambio en el estatuto.
Esta no es la primera vez que la Iglesia Católica enfrenta acusaciones de abuso sexual. Las acusaciones contra la institución religiosa han surgido en los últimos 16 años, a partir de 2002, cuando las acusaciones surgieron en Boston.
Además, el informe viene apenas semanas después de la resignación del cardenal Theodore E. McCarrick, el ex arzobispo de Washington, D.C., en medio de acusaciones de abuso sexual de seminaristas y sacerdotes jóvenes y niños menores durante varias décadas.
