The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has presented a proposal to punish legal immigrants who’ve accepted food stamps, public housing and other government benefits.
Designed to limit legal immigration and naturalization, the proposal would punish immigrants who are in the country legally – and in addition, everyone in the immigrant’s household. Those would include the immigrant’s children, even if they’re U.S. citizens and independently qualify for safety-net benefits.
The Trump administration has stated that details about the proposal are weeks away from being made public. However, various versions of it have been leaked over the past year.
The Trump administration is justifying the proposal by saying it’s an attempt to curb what it sees as cases of rampant fraud by immigrants using public benefits. Many media outlets have identified the proposal as the administration’s way of appealing to conservatives and motivating Republican voters before the midterm elections in November.
According to an Aug. 9 Washington Post commentary, the proposal “is a radical change from historical and current immigration policy.” The writers of the commentary accused the Trump administration of trying to change the “public charge” clause in immigration law and doing so to increase immigration restriction.
The proposal has sparked fears in Kansas City area residents such as Andrea Sanchez.
“I’m pregnant, but I decided to stop receiving prenatal assistance,” said Sanchez, a green card holder. “I’m afraid that in the future I may be denied citizenship.”

Eso incluye a los hijos del inmigrante, incluso si son ciudadanos de EE. UU. y califican independientemente para los beneficios de la red de seguridad.
El gobierno de Trump ha declarado que los detalles sobre la propuesta están a semanas de hacerse públicos. Sin embargo, durante el año pasado se han filtrado varias versiones.
El gobierno de Trump justifica la propuesta diciendo que es un intento de frenar lo que ve como casos de fraude desenfrenado por parte de inmigrantes que utilizan los beneficios públicos. Muchos medios de comunicación han identificado la propuesta como la manera en que el gobierno apela a los conservadores y motiva a los votantes republicanos antes de las elecciones de mitad de período en noviembre.
Según un comentario del Washington Post del 9 de agosto, la propuesta “es un cambio radical de la política de inmigración histórica y actual”. Los escritores del artículo de opinión acusaron al gobierno de Trump de intentar cambiar la cláusula de “carga pública” en la ley de inmigración y hacerlo para aumentar la restricción de la misma.
La propuesta ha despertado temores en los residentes del área de Kansas City, como en el caso de Andrea Sánchez.
“Estoy embarazada, pero decidí dejar de recibir asistencia prenatal”, dijo Sánchez, titular de una green card (permiso de residencia). “Temo que en el futuro se me puede negar la ciudadanía”.
