Make your vote heard in the midterm elections

Commentary by Tere Siqueira

On Nov. 6, you will have a chance to make your voice count.
Nov. 6 is the date for the midterm elections. The midterm elections are those elections held midway through a president’s term. They are the result of members of Congress holding seats for two-year periods, in the case of the House of Representatives; or six-year periods, in the case of the Senate. By contrast, the president serves four-year terms.
To understand why voting in the midterm elections should be a priority for you, consider the following:
*Control of Congress can shift from one party to another: The Republican Party controls both houses of Congress. But as media outlets have reported, the midterms can help the Democrats gain control of them. All 435 seats of the U.S. House are up for election, and 35 Senate seats will be on the ballot.
*Voting is America’s great equalizer: Regardless of social or economic conditions, every eligible citizen has the same power to vote as everyone else.
*The midterm elections are not only for Congress: There are other officials who are running for election or re-election at the state, county and local levels. If your live in Kansas, for example, you’ll have the chance to vote for Democrat Laura Kelly or Republican Kris Kobach for governor. Kansans also will be asked to vote for officials who serve under the governor, including the secretary of state and treasurer. In addition, important proposals might be on your ballot. Missourians, for example, will be asked if they want to legalize medicinal marijuana.
Remember to vote on Nov. 6. Make your voice count.
