Rudy’s celebrating silver anniversary

By Angie Baldelomar

Rudy Garcia always knew the restaurant business would be the path he would take.
Garcia’s hunch might have been based partly on family ties. In the early 1940s, his mother had the first licensed Mexican restaurant in Kansas.
“She was always cooking good food and people loved her food, so I always had the dream of wanting to open up a restaurant using my mother’s recipes,” he said.
After a few failed attempts and partnerships, Garcia and his wife opened Rudy’s Tenampa Taqueria in 1993 in Kansas City, Missouri’s Westport area. Working from the house-turned-office next to the restaurant, he and other family members manage the daily operations of the business, which opened a second location in August in Lenexa, Kansas.
Garcia attributes his success to his mother’s recipes.
“Everyone (who) opens any business hopes it is a success,” he said. “I hoped it was a success, and my faith in our success was using my mother’s recipes, so training our cooks to use her recipes down the line, … I think that really helped us.”
But Garcia also understands the restaurant business is a “people” business, where hospitality is key.
“I enjoy (getting) to meet customers, their families, … make sure they have a good experience,” he said.
No doubt, perseverance has been key to Garcia’s success, too. At times, running a business has been difficult, particularly in the beginning.
“I knew that if I would just stick with it through the hard times, the slow times, I knew that at some point it would take off,” he said. “I just had faith it would work out.”
Innovation also has been key. Rudy’s was the first area restaurant offering fish tacos. After the good reception they received, Garcia said he knew he needed to have other items that people could not easily get elsewhere.
“You need to keep up with your menu and put (out) things that you make really well, and people will come back,” he said.
Garcia – who was honored in November during the Noche de Gala event hosted by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City – has some advice for anyone looking to enter any kind of business: have a passion for it.
“I really believe if you don’t have that in you, you’re not going to make it in any business,” he said.
