How to stay safe during the winter

Commentary by Chara

The cold weather, it appears, will be here for a few months.
Unfortunately, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most Americans are not ready for wintertime, which can be hazardous. To make sure you are ready for winter, try the following tips:

*Winterize your home: This includes installing insulation materials, so you can stay safe and warm. In addition, check your heating system. If you have questions about winterization, call a professional to help you solve your problems.
*Conduct inspections – or have them done: Check over your fireplace or chimney. If they are dirty, then clean them. Make sure your gutters are clean and any leaks are repaired, too. And make sure your smoke detectors are working properly, as many home fires take place during the winter. Remember, smoke detector batteries should generally be replaced twice a year.
*Be prepared for winter storms: Put together an emergency kit for your home. It should include some non-perishable food you can store and open without any problems and plenty of water. Other essentials include a flashlight with batteries, a radio and an emergency kit. If a storm is coming, keep your cell phone charged and check on weather conditions in your area.
*Dress for the weather: If you plan to go outside, wear clothes that will protect you from the cold. Dress in several layers. Wear hats, scarves and winter boots. In addition, make sure have your cell phone charged if you plan to be outside for a while.
*Winterize your vehicle(s): Check your antifreeze levels and tire treads. If necessary, replace your tires to help you get good traction in the snow and ice. Try to keep your fuel tank full. Use a wintertime formula in your windshield washer to keep your windshield free of snow and ice. If possible, put together an emergency kit for your vehicle. It should include blankets, non-perishable food and water.

Debe incluir mantas, alimentos no perecederos y agua.
