Welcome tourists! In this edition, we will talk about Puerto Rico, one of the Free Associated States of the U.S. It is an archipelago that has the main island and other islands, islets, and smaller cays. Since 1917 all 4 million Puerto Ricans became American citizens.
Since the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1493 to 1898, they were directed by the Spaniards, for which the Hispano-American culture is so present in this place. Their main religion is the Catholicism and their language is Spanish.
Round flights from Kansas to Puerto Rico have an average price of $300, both for the city of San Juan (capital) and Aguadilla, with 2 layovers. The best way to get around the main island is by car and there are several companies to rent them. There are also some buses and taxis that will allow you to move around some areas. The accommodation is quite elevated in comparison with other places in the Caribbean. The average price in a hotel 3 stars is $120 per night. In a 5 stars hotel, you can find rooms with a cost of more than $1,000. In terms of gastronomy, the main ingredients of each meal are bananas and pork, the vast majority of dishes have these ingredients accompanied by a clear soup of rice and beans. I encourage you to try pork chops and suckling pig roasted, the average cost of a meal is $15.
Below I describe some of the places you should visit during your visit to this beautiful Caribbean island:
San Juan, the most historic and traditional part of all of Puerto Rico, besides being the capital of the state. You should visit the San Felipe del Morro Castle, which began its construction in 1539 and took almost 250 years to complete it. It is undoubtedly one of the largest Spanish forts in the Caribbean. I advise you to hire a guided tour so you learn all the secrets that are kept here. Take advantage of and enjoy the El Escambrón spa, one of the most famous and central beaches of the capital. Here you can swim, snorkel or even dive. Enjoy the beautiful fortress of San Cristóbal Castle which began its construction in 1634 and ended 156 years later, this place is ideal to take pictures of spectacular landscapes of the entire coast. It’s also the largest Spanish fortification in the New World. Also from the Port of San Juan, you can take one of the many cruises that are on the island to visit the different points of the main island as well as the small islands that surround it. In addition, the Port offers a ferry to Punta Cana, Republic Dominican.
Culebra is a small island that also belongs to the archipelago of Puerto Rico. Here is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, also known as Flamenco Beach. This beach stretches for about 1 mile protected by a horseshoe-shaped bay. The color of its sand is almost white, while the shades of the water are of different turquoise tones, the stillness of its waters and the wild environment make it the second most beautiful beach in the world to visit by tourists. The easiest way to get there is on a ferry that takes around 50 minutes and leaves from the main island. I advise you to hire snorkeling or diving service, so you can get to know the beautiful coral reef that surrounds this area.
Vieques is another island, part of Puerto Rico’s archipelago. The interesting thing about this island is that during some months of the year in Mosquito Bay a Bioluminescence effect is created thanks to the microorganisms that live in this area and that have a molecule called luciferin that causes them to shine and give light effects own both on the beach and in the sea water. There are very few places in the world where you can appreciate this phenomenon of nature. The best months to appreciate this effect are from March to December.
Aguadilla is a municipality located northeast of Puerto Rico. Here you can enjoy the water park of Las Cascadas Water Park, undoubtedly a place of fun for the whole family. The beach of Crash Boat is undoubtedly the most famous of this place, surrounded by a white sand and big waves that will allow you to surf if you wish, besides it is a good place to snorkel and dive for the clarity of its waters, considered one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Puerto Rico.
Being a member of the United States, the national currency is the dollar and if you are a foreigner, you will require the same type of visa you need to enter any part of the United States.

Conoce Puerto Rico
Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de uno de los Estados Libres no incorporados de EE.UU., se trata de un archipiélago que cuenta con una isla principal y otras islas, islotes y cayos más pequeños, nos referimos a Puerto Rico. A partir del año 1917 todos los puertorriqueños pasaron a ser ciudadanos americanos y actualmente cuenta con casi 4 millones de habitantes.
Desde la llegada de Cristóbal Colón en 1493 hasta 1898 fueron dirigidos por los españoles, por lo cual la cultura hispanoamericana se encuentra tan presente en este lugar, teniendo como religión principal el catolicismo y como idioma principal el español dejando como segundo idioma oficial al inglés.
Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Puerto Rico tienen un costo promedio de $300, tanto para la ciudad de San Juan (capital) como para la ciudad de Aguadilla y cuentan con al menos 2 escalas. La mejor forma de moverse por toda la isla principal es en automóvil y existen varias compañías para la renta de autos, también hay algunos autobuses que te permitirán desplazarte por algunas zonas así como taxis. El hospedaje en toda la isla es bastante elevado en comparación con otros sitios del caribe, teniendo como precio promedio en un hotel 3 estrellas de $120 la noche, mientras que en un hotel 5 estrellas puedes encontrar habitaciones con costo de más de $1,000 la noche. En cuanto a gastronomía, los principales ingredientes de cada comida son el plátano y la carne de cerdo, la gran mayoría de los platillos llevan estos ingredientes acompañados claro con sopa de arroz y frijoles, te animo a que pruebas las chuletas de cerdo y el lechón asado, el costo promedio de una comida es de $15.
A continuación te describo algunos de los lugares que deberás conocer en tu visita a esta hermosa isla caribeña:
San Juan, la parte más histórica y tradicional de todo Puerto Rico, además de ser la capital del estado. Deberás conocer el Castillo San Felipe del Morro, el cual empezó su construcción en el año 1539 y que llevó casi 250 años la culminación del mismo, es sin duda uno de los fuertes españoles más grandes en el Caribe, les recomiendo contratar algún tour guiado para que conozcan todos los secretos que aquí se guardan. Aprovecha y disfruta de el balneario El Escambrón, una de las playas más famosas y céntricas de la capital, aquí podrás nadar, snorkelear o incluso bucear. También disfruta de la bella fortaleza del Castillo de San Cristóbal el cual empezó su construcción en el año 1634 y terminó 156 años después, este lugar es ideal para tomar fotografías de paisajes espectaculares de toda la costa, además de que esta si es la fortificación española más grande dentro del Nuevo Mundo. También desde el Puerto de San Juan podrás tomar alguno de los muchos cruceros que hay en la isla tanto para conocer la los distintos puntos de la isla principal como de las pequeñas islas que la rodean, incluso sale un ferry de aquí a Punta Cana, República Dominicana por si te interesa conocer también ese bello país.
Culebra, es una pequeña isla que pertenece también al archipiélago de Puerto Rico. Aquí se encuentra una de las playas consideradas más bellas en el mundo, también conocida como Playa Flamenco; esta playa se extiende por alrededor de 1 milla protegida por una bahía en forma de herradura, el color de su arena es casi blanca, mientras que las tonalidades del agua son de distintos tonos turquesas, la quietud de sus aguas y el entorno silvestre hacen que esté considerada por Discovery Channel como la segunda playa más bonita en el mundo para visitar por turistas. La forma más sencilla de llegar es en un ferry que tarda alrededor de 50 minutos y sale de la isla principal. Te recomiendo si eres amante de la vida marina que contrates servicio de snorkel o buceo para que conozcas el hermoso arrecife de coral que rodea toda esta zona.
Vieques, se trata de otra isla perteneciente al archipiélago de Puerto Rico. Lo interesante de esta isla es que durante algunos meses del año en la Bahía de Mosquito se crea un efecto de Bioluminiscencia gracias a los microorganismos que viven en esta zona y que cuentan con una molécula llamada luciferina que hace que estos brillen y den efectos de luz propia tanto en la playa como en el agua del mar, existen muy pocos lugares en el mundo en donde puedes apreciar este fenómeno de la naturaleza. Los mejores meses para apreciar este efecto son de marzo a diciembre.
Aguadilla, es un municipio que se encuentra al noreste de Puerto Rico. Aquí podrás disfrutar del parque acuático de Las Cascadas Water Park, sin duda un lugar de diversión para toda la familia. La playa de Crash Boat sin duda es la más famosa de este lugar, rodeada de una arena blanca y grandes olas que te permitirán hacer surf si así lo deseas, además de que es un buen sitio para realizar snorkeling y buceo por la claridad de sus aguas, es considerada una de las playas más bonitas de todo Puerto Rico.
Al ser perteneciente a Estados Unidos la moneda nacional es el dólar y si eres extranjero requerirás el mismo tipo de visado que necesitas para entrar a cualquier parte de EE.UU.
