On March 1-2, Kansas Democrats celebrated Washington Days, which included a Latina Trailblazer panel, in Topeka, Kansas.
The panel, which drew a large audience, included Democrat Rep. Susan Ruiz, elected in November to the Kansas state legislature, representing District 23; Delia Garcia, interim Secretary of Labor and former legislator from Wichita; Michele de la Isla, Mayor of Topeka, elected in 2017; and Teresa Garcia Kruser, Democratic National Committeewoman. Aude Negrete, of Overland Park, facilitated the panel.
Ruiz and Garcia spoke of their respective fathers’ involvement with labor unions and the influence on their families. Both remember learning at a young age the power of the vote and voting.
De la Isla’s desire for a better future for her children was the inspiration to seek elected office first on the Topeka City Council and then as mayor.
Garcia Kruser spoke of her passion to help others that led to her involvement with the Kansas Democratic Party and her position as KDP’s National Committeewoman.
The three elected officials—Ruiz, Garcia, and de la Isla—told the audience that they were encouraged by friends to seek elected office. Each stated they filed on the last day and had to scramble to establish their campaign and raise funds. Their advice? File early.

García Kruser habló de su pasión por ayudar a otros, lo que la llevó a involucrarse con el Partido Demócrata de Kansas y a su posición como Comisionada Nacional de KDP.
