Jolie Justus thinks Kansas City, Missouri, needs a mayor who cares about everyone in the city – and who has a proven record of getting things done.
Justus believes she can be that person.
“I’ve got a dedicated track record of getting things done,” she said.
Justus is among 11 candidates running for mayor in the April 2 primary election. The two candidates who receive the most votes will face each other in the June 18 general election.
Justus serves on the City Council. She was appointed by current Mayor Sly James to serve as chair of the Airport Committee, vice chair of the Finance and Governance Committee, and as a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Before that, she represented Kansas City in the Missouri Senate for eight years.
Before holding public office, Justus worked as the director of pro bono services at Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP, where she represented Kansas City’s most vulnerable citizens. That experience has shaped her career in politics. Justus said her goal is to help create a city that addresses issues from all communities, thus making it more attractive for businesses and individuals.
“Kansas City is a good place to start and grow … (a) business,” she said.
However, Justus said it is important to also focus on the quality of life, which means equitable education, transportation and housing, among other things. Justus also understands the disparities among various population segments in terms of accessing those services.
Justus promises to use her experience to try to alleviate the disparities. She said she has a record of bringing diverse groups of people together.
“I think part of it is through collaboration, working with every single stakeholder, bringing in all the voices,” Justus said.
On that note, she believes surrounding herself with a diverse staff within the mayoral office is key. That way, the population will feel it is being heard.
Justus is confident she is the person Kansas City needs to not only keep the momentum going forward, but also to spread the success to all the communities in the city.
“My door will always be open,” she said.

Fue nombrada por el actual alcalde Sly James como presidente del Comité de Aeropuertos, vicepresidente del Comité de Finanzas y Gobernabilidad y como miembro del Comité de Transporte e Infraestructura. Antes de eso, ella representó a Kansas City en el Senado de Missouri durante ocho años.
Antes de ocupar un cargo público, Justus trabajó como la directora de servicios pro bono en Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP, donde representó a los ciudadanos más vulnerables de Kansas City. Esa experiencia ha dado forma a su carrera en la política. En esa nota, ella cree que rodearse de un personal diverso dentro de la oficina de la alcaldía es clave. De esa manera, la población sentirá que está siendo escuchada.
Justus confía en que ella es la persona que Kansas City necesita no sólo para seguir llevando el impulso positivo hacia delante, pero también para difundir el éxito a todas las comunidades en la ciudad.
“Mi puerta siempre estará abierta”, dijo.
