A military career was Janice Martinez’s first career path choice after high school.
Martinez is being honored by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City for making that choice.
Martinez is the recipient of the 2019 Nuestra Latina Military/Law Enforcement Award. The Nuestra Latina Awards will be presented Aug. 29 at the University of Kansas Edwards campus in Overland Park.
Martinez’s career choice was inspired in part by her stepfather, a military officer who then worked at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, as a doctor until he retired. After graduating from high school, she enlisted in the Army Reserve.
Martinez came to the United States from the Dominican Republic when she was 16. At that age, she settled in Shawnee, Kansas, not speaking any English. But she overcame that obstacle and attended military training with limited English while excelling at her work.
It was Martinez’s ability to overcome the language barrier that makes honors like the Nuestra Latina Awards important to her.
“It means a lot to recognize an effort like that because … there are so many young Latinas who don’t know what to do and they may have an interest (in something), but they may be afraid because of the language barrier or maybe the culture barrier,” she said.
Growing up with two older brothers, Martinez was never intimated by a male-dominated field like the military. She has always been “mentally tough,” which has helped her overcome any obstacles she has encountered, she said.
Her military job turned into a federal one. Martinez has worked for the Federal Government, where she has served for almost 10 years. She has been married for 16 years. Her husband also was in the military.
“That was also a challenge,” Martinez said. “Not only (did) I … (join) the military at a young age, but I also was a military spouse.”
Awards like the Nuestra Latina Awards are important for the next generation, Martinez said.
“We can all set an example or be someone a young person can look up to,” she said. “And having that recognition and being an example for not only Latinas but any other immigrant that comes to this country … is very important.”

Martínez recibe un Premio Nuestra Latina por carrera militar
Una carrera militar fue la primera elección de carrera de Janice Martínez después de la secundaria.
Martínez está siendo celebrada por la Cámara de Comercio Hispana del Gran Kansas City por tomar esa decisión.
Martínez recibirá el Premio Nuestra Latina 2019 en la categoría de Militar/Leyes del Orden. Los Premios Nuestra Latina se entregarán el 29 de agosto en el Edward Campus de la Universidad de Kansas en Overland Park.
La elección de carrera de Martínez fue inspirada en parte por su padrastro, un oficial militar que luego trabajó en Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, como médico hasta que se retiró. Después de graduarse de la escuela secundaria, se alistó en el ejército.
Martínez llegó a Estados Unidos desde República Dominicana cuando tenía 16 años. A esa edad, se estableció en Shawnee, Kansas, sin hablar inglés. Pero ella superó ese obstáculo y asistió a un entrenamiento militar con inglés limitado mientras sobresalía en su trabajo.
Fue la capacidad de Martínez de superar la barrera del idioma lo que hace que reconocimientos como los Premios Nuestra Latina sean importante para ella.
“Significa mucho reconocer un esfuerzo como ese porque … hay muchas latinas jóvenes que no saben qué hacer y pueden estar interesadas (en algo), pero pueden tener miedo debido a la barrera del idioma o tal vez la barrera cultural”, dijo.
Al crecer con dos hermanos mayores, Martínez nunca se sintió intimidada por un campo dominado por hombres como el ejército. Siempre ha sido “mentalmente fuerte”, lo que la ha ayudado a superar cualquier obstáculo que haya encontrado, dijo.
Su trabajo militar se convirtió en federal. Martínez ha trabajado para el Gobierno Federal, donde ha servido durante casi 10 años. Ha estado casada por 16 años. Su esposo también estuvo en el ejército.
“Eso también fue un desafío”, dijo Martínez. “No sólo me uní al ejército a una edad temprana, sino que también fui una cónyuge militar”.
Premios como los Premios Nuestra Latina son importantes para la siguiente generación, dijo Martínez.
“Todos podemos dar el ejemplo o ser alguien a quién una persona joven pueda admirar”, dijo. “Y tener ese reconocimiento y ser un modelo a seguir no sólo para las latinas sino para cualquier inmigrante que venga a este país … es muy importante”.
