Rodriguez-Gunion, award recipient, keeps business going
Angelique Rodriguez-Gunion is being honored for more than 16 years of hard work and balancing the ups and downs of running a business.
Recently, Rodriguez-Gunion was announced as this year’s recipient of the Nuestra Latina Entrepreneurship Award. The Nuestra Latina Awards are scheduled to be presented during an Aug. 29 ceremony, presented by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City (HCC), at the University of Kansas Edwards Campus in Overland Park.
The award and being recognized with all the other Nuestra Latina recipients came as a surprise for the entrepreneur.
“I usually give awards, but to receive one, it was very shocking and exciting,” Rodriguez-Gunion said. “My mom had me (when she was still) in high school, … so I’m very honored to receive this in her name.”
Amid skepticism, Rodriguez-Gunion became the first female in her family to attend college. While in school, she was a store manager for Nine West. After becoming district manager, the company moved her to New York City.
This experience during her 20s gave her independence and helped shape her as a woman. She also owes her success to moving forward through all her problems.
“The most significant thing is to keep getting up,” the entrepreneur said. “Don’t dwell on the negative. I focus on working through and solving the problems or figuring out what I need to do to keep succeeding.”
Rodriguez-Gunion is the CEO and founder of her own company, Titan Environmental Services (TES). The company is a family business where Rodriguez-Gunion’s husband, mother, relatives and friends as a team to get the job done.
Rodriguez-Gunion and her husband founded TES in December 2003 to offer solutions to organizations regarding environmental management and regulatory compliance issues. The business serves the private and public sectors in the Midwest and beyond.
The mother of four also holds the vice chair position on the HCC board.
“I think (it) is a blessing because, in some ways, I get to meet people that can help me and business friends that can guide me,” Rodriguez-Gunion said. “At the same time, I can help people that may have questions and give them a real picture of what it’s like running a business.”
The businesswoman and HCC board member believes it is an important moment for Hispanic females to become entrepreneurs.
“It’s important for our children to see that women can be someone outside of the home,” she said. “It’s up to you to keep being active and involved. You have to keep fighting for your identity or for the example you want to set up for the kids. Give your 100 percent effort and keep going.”

Angelique Rodríguez-Gunion está siendo honrada por más de 16 años de arduo trabajo y de equilibrar los altibajos de la gestión de un negocio.
Recientemente, Rodríguez-Gunion fue anunciada como la ganadora del Premio Nuestra Latina este año. Los Premios Nuestra Latina están programados para ser presentados durante una ceremonia el 29 de agosto, presentada por la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Kansas City (HCC), en el campus de la Universidad de Kansas Edwards en Overland Park.
El premio y el ser reconocida con todas las demás ganadoras de Nuestra Latina fue una sorpresa para la emprendedora.
“Normalmente doy premios, pero recibir uno fue muy impactante y emocionante”, dijo Rodríguez-Gunion. “Mi madre me tuvo (cuando aún estaba) en la escuela preparatoria … así que me siento muy honrada de recibir esto en su nombre”.
En medio del escepticismo, Rodríguez-Gunion se convirtió en la primera mujer de su familia en asistir a la universidad. Mientras estaba en la escuela, fue gerente de la tienda de Nine West. Después de convertirse en gerente de distrito, la compañía la trasladó a la ciudad de Nueva York.
Vivir esta experiencia a los 20 años le dio independencia y ayudó a formarla como mujer. También debe su éxito a superar los problemas.
“Lo más importante es seguir levantándose”, dijo la empresaria. “No dejes que lo negativo te detenga. Me concentro en trabajar y resolver los problemas o en averiguar qué debo hacer para seguir teniendo éxito”.
Rodríguez-Gunion es la CEO y fundadora de su propia compañía, Titan Environmental Services (TES). La compañía es un negocio familiar donde el esposo, la madre, los parientes y amigos de trabajan en equipo.
Rodríguez-Gunion y su esposo fundaron TES en diciembre de 2003 para ofrecer soluciones a las organizaciones con respecto a la gestión ambiental y los problemas de cumplimiento normativo. El negocio sirve a los sectores público y privado dentro y fuera del Medio Oeste.
La madre de cuatro también ocupa el puesto de vicepresidenta en la junta de HCC.
“Creo que es una bendición porque, de alguna manera, puedo conocer gente que me puede ayudar y amigos de negocios que me pueden guiar”, dijo Rodríguez-Gunion. “Al mismo tiempo, puedo ayudar a las personas que tengan preguntas y darles una imagen real de cómo es administrar una empresa”.
La empresaria y miembro de la junta de HCC cree que es un momento importante para que las mujeres hispanas se conviertan en emprendedoras.
“Es importante que nuestros hijos vean que las mujeres pueden ser alguien fuera del hogar”, dijo. “Depende de ti mantenerte activa e involucrada. Debes seguir luchando por tu identidad o por el ejemplo que deseas enseñar a tus niños. Esfuérzate al 100 por ciento y sigue adelante ”.
