More than 1,500 children have been separated from their parents under the Trump administration, according to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
According to multiple media outlets, around 200 children were ages 5 years and younger, and most children were 12 years and younger.
According to NBC News, the ACLU said the administration told its attorneys that 1,556 children had been separated between July 1, 2017, and June 26, 2018, when a federal judge in San Diego ordered that children in government custody should be reunited with their parents.
“It is shocking that 1,556 more families — including babies and toddlers — join the thousands of others already torn apart by this inhumane and illegal policy,” Lee Gelernt, an ACLU attorney, was quoted in a news release as saying. “Families have suffered tremendously, and some may never recover. The gravity of this situation cannot be overstated.”
Since the judge in San Diego gave the order, there have been more separations and deportations, according to the ACLU, which is trying to find out which families have been reunited and which families remain separated. The civil rights organization also claims the government has bad tracking systems, making it difficult to track where the children are. Its biggest worry is that parents are still being deported without their children.
“These are the families we’re going to have to search for all over the world,” Gelernt commented to the Washington Post. “We’re still in the middle of trying to find them.”
Kansas City area residents such as Gustavo Lopez consider the number of separated children reported by the ACLU as “scary.”
“Imagine that someone comes and takes your child away or imagine if one day your child comes from school and doesn’t find you,” the Overland Park, Kansas, resident said. “We should stop this inhumane policy. It is very sad to see that the current administration doesn’t have any kind of remorse for the things that are happening. We should be ashamed of it.”
