WOME’S History Month: Alma Vargas, Vargas is changing lives in the Latin community

By Tere Siqueira
Each March to honor Women’s History Month, Dos Mundos honors Latinas whose accomplishments have helped and/or inspired the community. One of this year’s eight honorees is Alma Vargas, the founder of the charity Mision Alcance (Mission Scope in English).
Born in Mexico, Vargas eventually moved to the United States, where she learned English and worked to become a legal citizen.
“As I was growing into higher positions (at work), … I understood the importance of learning English,” she said. “You need to work on improving and educating yourself. However, I also realized the obstacles that immigrants face.”
For a while, Vargas worked for a Christian radio station, where she advised Latinos about organizations that could help them address their social issues. Then, she volunteered for many organizations.
While working in Wyandotte County, Vargas made many connections with legal and social organizations. She also received an education about the issues immigrants face. Finally, in 2017, she established Mision Alcance.
“I trained a group of people to learn how to scan the individual problems on each person and (determine what) … was the best way to help them,” Vargas said. “This was mainly focused on immigrants because they don’t have the same resources that other citizens do. I was inspired by the things I went through when I first came to this country.”
Mision Alcance connects programs to individuals who need them. Vargas leads a team of 50 people, located across several communities. Under her leadership, the organization also has expanded its outreach to Mexico, Cuba, Africa and Venezuela.
Vargas and her husband fully finance the non-profit organization. They use their money to access the tools that will help people establish connections.
Additionally, Vargas has relationships with medical clinics. They give her access to doctors who do free procedures.
“We make visits to people’s houses,” she said. “Many people are suffering from chronic diseases. Most of the time, those people don’t have Social Security or health care insurance, … so they don’t have access to medical attention.”
For Vargas, who does not request donations, the reward comes from changing families’ lives and seeing them be happy. She considers her work as her way of recognizing the importance of immigrants.
Another reward for Vargas is knowing she has the power to positively influence politicians and health professionals.
“I don’t care if people think less of me … (for) being a Latina,” she said. “If we don’t like politics, we have to talk to change things. Don’t just complain. … We need to speak with those available to change things.”
Vargas encourages people to understand that fears about immigration are irrational and that God has brought immigrants to America for a reason. She takes special care to emphasize that message to immigrants themselves.
“You are all came here looking for a better life and you can do it,” Vargas said. “You have potential and you are bringing richness to the country.”
The United States consists of multiple ingredients and the Latin community is one of those ingredients, the philanthropist said. It is time for Americans to think about what immigrants can give to this country, she said.

No te quejes solamente. …
