On Nov. 4, El Centro Inc. hosted the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new satellite office, located at 201 E. Louis St. in Olathe, Kansas.
Public figures attending included Olathe Mayor John Bacon, Olathe Police Chief Mike Butaud, Johnson County Manager Penny Postoak Ferguson, and Johnson County Commissioners Becky Fast and Janee Hanzlick. Others attending included partners from the Shawnee Mission and Olathe school districts; United Health; the Johnson County Mental Health Center; the Johnson County Health Department; funders; members of the construction team; and the project architect.
The ceremony capped many months of work. According to Irene Caudillo, El Centro CEO, everything started when the board of directors approved the agency’s business plan to grow its footprint in Johnson County.
“We have served Johnson County for years, but more recently, (we were) in a 600-square-foot office, limiting our ability to adequately serve our community,” Caudillo said. “We began searching for a building in early 2020. COVID-19 … (ravaged) the world, but our board felt we should continue moving forward with this goal.”
“By early 2021, we narrowed our search to two buildings until signing all the paperwork to purchase the 201 E. Louis location in Olathe,” she continued. “We utilized our endowment and received funding from the Sunderland Foundation to purchase and renovate the building to meet the current needs, with the capacity to grow.”
El Centro acquired the building in March. Construction and remodeling cost $1.5 million.
Services to be provided at the new office include financial literacy, emergency assistance, health education, prescription assistance, health billing assistance, insurance assistance, voter education and registration, nutrition education, individual taxpayer identification number application assistance, and tax assistance.
“We are proud to serve our community,” Caudillo said. “This new building is a welcoming center with culturally and linguistically appropriate services for those we serve. Our growth with this building is not only for Latinos, but (also) to collaborate with our partners to better serve our growing Latino population in Johnson County.”

El 4 de noviembre, El Centro Inc. celebró la gran inauguración de su nueva oficina satélite, ubicada en 201 E. Louis St. en Olathe, Kansas.
Las figuras públicas que asistieron incluyeron al alcalde de Olathe, John Bacon, el jefe de policía de Olathe, Mike Butaud, la gerente del condado de Johnson, Penny Postoak Ferguson, y las comisionadas del condado de Johnson, Becky Fast y Janee Hanzlick. Otros asistentes incluyeron socios de los distritos escolares de Shawnee Mission y Olathe; United Health; el Centro de Salud Mental del Condado de Johnson; el Departamento de Salud del Condado de Johnson; financiadores; miembros del equipo de construcción; y el arquitecto del proyecto.
La ceremonia dio fin a muchos meses de trabajo. Según Irene Caudillo, directora ejecutiva de El Centro, todo comenzó cuando la junta directiva aprobó el plan de negocios de la agencia para hacer crecer su presencia en el condado de Johnson.
“Hemos servido al condado de Johnson durante años, pero más recientemente, (estábamos) en una oficina de 600 pies cuadrados, lo que limita nuestra capacidad para servir adecuadamente a nuestra comunidad”, dijo Caudillo. “Comenzamos a buscar un edificio a principios de 2020. El COVID-19… (devastó) el mundo, pero nuestra junta sintió que deberíamos seguir avanzando con este objetivo”.
“A principios de 2021, redujimos nuestra búsqueda a dos edificios hasta que firmamos toda la documentación para comprar la ubicación 201 E. Louis en Olathe”, continuó. “Utilizamos nuestra donación y recibimos fondos de la Fundación Sunderland para comprar y renovar el edificio para satisfacer las necesidades actuales, con la capacidad de crecer”.
El Centro adquirió el edificio en marzo. La construcción y remodelación costaron $1.5 millones.
Los servicios que se brindarán en la nueva oficina incluyen educación financiera, asistencia de emergencia, educación para la salud, asistencia para recetas médicas, asistencia para facturación de salud, asistencia para seguros, educación y registro de votantes, educación sobre nutrición, asistencia para la solicitud del número de identificación del contribuyente individual y asistencia fiscal.
“Estamos orgullosos de servir a nuestra comunidad”, dijo Caudillo. “Este nuevo edificio es un centro acogedor con servicios cultural y lingüísticamente apropiados para aquellos a quienes servimos. Nuestro crecimiento con este edificio no es sólo para los latinos, sino también para colaborar con nuestros socios para servir mejor a nuestra creciente población latina en el condado de Johnson”.
