How to prepare for retirement

Commentary by Roberta Pardo

It’s never too early to start planning your retirement.
Financial experts encourage workers to start saving as early as possible because achieving financial security in retirement takes planning and commitment. But like anything, putting money away for retirement is a habit we all need to cultivate.
Here are some tips to help you get started, provided courtesy of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL):

*Know how much money you’ll need for retirement: Experts estimate that you will need 70 to 90 percent of your preretirement income to maintain your standard of living you when you stop working.
*If your company offers a retirement fund, put money into it: Doing so will lower your taxes, and companies often will match your contributions, thus helping you to build your nest egg.
“Over time, compound interests and tax deferrals make a big difference in the amount you will accumulate,” the DOL states.
*Diversify your investments: As financial experts also will attest, diversifying helps improve your chances of growing your money. Remember, with investing comes the risk of losing money.
*Avoid early withdrawals from your retirement savings: Early withdrawals could cost you tax benefits. That’s why the DOL advises workers who are about to change jobs to keep what they’ve saved in their current retirement account, or if necessary, roll the funds into the retirement plan at their next job or an IRA.
*Inquire: Talk to financial specialists about your needs and goals and the ways you can meet them. Other resources include the websites of organizations listed by the DOL in its pamphlet “Top 10 Ways to Prepare for Retirement.” Those organizations include the American Savings Education Council and the Actuarial Foundation.
