Salinas overcomes adversity, reaches management position

Aracely Salinas knows what it’s like to overcome adversity and achieve success in the business world.
A Kansas City area resident who’s originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, and who left Mexico for the United States at age 4, Salinas is the sales manager at KCK Maintenance. Because she didn’t attend college, the mother of five has learned most of her skills on the job, she said.
Salinas got her first on-the-job administrative experience with her ex-husband’s company. Then, in 2011, after getting divorced, she started looking for administrative work to support her children financially. She went on to work for various companies, holding positions in administration, marketing and sales.
“I am a firm believer that we all have a purpose,” Salinas said. “I never went to college; the most I had was a GED that I got when I was 30 years old after I got divorced. So everything I know I sort of learned on my own. I just learned from each company and being a mom. I really pushed myself to do the best and learn as much (as I could), so I could give a better future to my kids.”
Salinas is confident those opportunities were doors opened by God that allowed her to offer a better life to her children, something for which she’s grateful. But she experienced challenges in climbing the career ladder, she acknowledged.
Salinas also faced those work-related challenges while managing issues in her personal life. She was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. She also has had to deal with anemia. Recently, she underwent a hysterectomy to remove a precancerous tumor. In addition, she had to deal with the death of her cousin.
“It was very hard on me,” Salinas shared. “She actually committed suicide. … (There) was just a lot going on, like domestic violence, and it just pushed her to that. It was very hard on me because I went through domestic violence. I was at that point in my life at some point. So it really hit me because she actually went through with it. I’ve met people that need someone to speak about sexual abuse because that’s something that’s not spoken about.”
To help other women struggling with domestic abuse, Salinas wants to eventually open her own business and offer work opportunities to women who usually get shut down and offer them a way to leave unhealthy relationships, she said.
In the meantime, Salinas’ current position at KCK Maintenance offers her the opportunity to do something meaningful, she said. Every contract she closes has multiple positive effects on those around her, whether that’s by helping her coworkers, helping other companies with tailoring their needs or creating more employment for those in need, she explained.
Salinas has a message she hopes will help the area’s Hispanic community.
“Nothing is impossible. … We are capable of fulfilling our dreams and goals,” she said. “Sometimes, we close the world to ourselves because we think we can’t because of our circumstances. But if you stop your world for a second and look around you, you will realize all the blessings that God gives us every day – and despite the obstacles, he gives you the strength and puts you with the right people to get ahead.”
Salinas supera la adversidad y alcanza un puesto gerencial

Residente del área de Kansas City, originaria de Chihuahua, México, y se mudo de México a Estados Unidos a los 4 años de edad. Salinas es gerente de ventas en KCK Maintenance. Debido a que no asistió a la universidad, la madre de cinco hijos ha aprendido la mayoría de sus habilidades en el trabajo, dijo.
Salinas obtuvo su primera experiencia administrativa laboral con la empresa de su ex marido. En 2011, tras divorciarse, empezó a buscar trabajo administrativo para ayudar económicamente a sus hijos. Pasó a trabajar para varias empresas, ocupando puestos en administración, marketing y ventas.
«Soy una firme creyente de que todos tenemos un propósito», dice Salinas. «Nunca fui a la universidad; lo máximo que tuve fue un GED que obtuve a los 30 años después de divorciarme. Así que todo lo que sé lo aprendí por mi cuenta. Aprendí de cada empresa y de ser madre. Me esforcé mucho por hacerlo lo mejor posible y aprender todo lo que pudiera para darles un futuro mejor a mis hijos».
Salinas confía en que esas oportunidades fueron puertas abiertas por Dios que le permitieron ofrecer una vida mejor a sus hijos, algo por lo que está agradecida. Pero reconoce el haber atravesado por dificultades para ascender en su carrera
Salinas también se enfrentó a esos retos laborales mientras gestionaba problemas en su vida personal. Le diagnosticaron diabetes de tipo 2. También ha tenido que lidiar con la anemia. Recientemente atravesó una histerectomía para extirparle un tumor precanceroso. Además, tuvo que enfrentarse a la muerte de su prima.
«Fue muy duro para mí», dice Salinas. «Se suicidó … había)muchas cosas, como violencia doméstica, que la empujaron a ello. Fue muy duro para mí porque yo sufrí violencia doméstica. Estuve en ese punto de mi vida en algún momento. Así que realmente me afectó porque ella realmente pasó por eso. He conocido a gente que necesita que alguien hable de los abusos sexuales porque es algo de lo que no se habla».
Para ayudar a otras mujeres que luchan contra el maltrato doméstico, Salinas quiere abrir con el tiempo su propio negocio y ofrecer oportunidades de trabajo a mujeres a las que normalmente se les cierra la puerta y ofrecerles una forma de salir de relaciones insanas.
Mientras tanto, su puesto actual en KCK Maintenance le ofrece la oportunidad de hacer algo significativo. Cada contrato que cierra tiene múltiples efectos positivos en quienes la rodean, ya sea ayudando a sus compañeros de trabajo, apoyando a otras empresas a adaptar sus necesidades o creando más empleo para quienes lo necesitan, explicó.
Salinas tiene un mensaje que espera ayude a la comunidad hispana de la zona.
«Nada es imposible… somos capaces de cumplir nuestros sueños y metas», dijo. «A veces, cerramos el mundo a nosotros mismos porque pensamos que no podemos debido a nuestras circunstancias. Pero si detienes tu mundo por un segundo y miras a tu alrededor, te darás cuenta de todas las bendiciones que Dios nos da cada día – y a pesar de los obstáculos, te da la fuerza y te pone con la gente adecuada para salir adelante.»
