In observance of Mother’s Day (May 14 this year), Dos Mundos is sharing the stories of Kansas City area Latin mothers. Maria del Carmen Sevilla is one of them.
A business owner in Overland Park, Kansas, who has been a hairstylist for more than 50 years, Sevilla has three blood children: Alejandra, Andrea, Hector and a son of heart: Eduardo. It was one of her daughters that prompted her to leave her native Guadalajara, Mexico for the United States. One of her daughters had a child with special needs, she recalled.
“I came to support her and then I decided to stay,” Sevilla said.
Eventually, after relocating, Sevilla opened a hair salon, Le Coquette. She still is proud of her accomplishment.
“Getting my cosmetologist license was not easy,” Sevilla said. “I worked hard for it and I started my business. It has been 16 years (ago) that I started with it and it is part of my life.”
Sevilla also is proud to be a mother. When Alejandra, her first child, was born, she “was so scared of everything,” she recalled.
“Then, Andrea was born and it was a beautiful pregnancy,” Sevilla said. “I felt so happy.”
When Hector, her third child, was born, it was a new experience for Sevilla.
“When Hector was born, it was wonderful,” she said. “It was a change for me … (from) having two little girls to have a baby boy.”
Sevilla thanks God for her children and grandchildren.
“I feel complete,” she said. “My children and grandchildren are the best things that have happened to me and I will always be here for them.”
Like other mothers, Sevilla experienced challenges in raising her children. Learning how to guide them and teaching them how to fight for what they want were among the challenges she faced, she recalled.
Sevilla turned to one of her role models when tackling those challenges and others: her mother.
“My mom is an inspiration to me,” she said. “She always taught us to be united as a family, and that is what I’ve taught my children.”
Sevilla, in turn, is sharing the wisdom she has learned as a parent with other mothers in the community. She advises mothers to communicate with their children and stay close to them.
“I know in Latino families, sometimes, moms and dads have to work,” Seville said. “However, I will tell mothers in our community to (take time to) talk to their children, love them and have … good communication with them. Let your children know you will be supporting them all the way.”
Sevilla is looking forward to celebrating Mother’s Day with her children and grandchildren.
“Mother’s Day to me means a day of love and a day to thank God for my beautiful children,” she said. “Each one of them has their personality. They have created their own path, and I’m just so happy to see them happy. Also, I feel happy because I have (a) double celebration. We (have) Mother’s Day in the states and Mother’s Day in Mexico.”

En honor al Día de la Madre (que este año será el 14 de mayo), Dos Mundos comparte historias de las madres latinas del área de Kansas City. María del Carmen Sevilla es una de ellas.
Dueña de un negocio en Overland Park, Kansas, y quien ha sido estilista por más de 50 años, Sevilla tiene tres hijos de sangre Alejandra, Andrea y Héctor y un hijo de corazon: Eduardo. Fue una de sus hijas la que la impulsó a dejar su natal Guadalajara, México por Estados Unidos. Una de sus hijas tenía un hijo con necesidades especiales, recordó.
“Vine a apoyarla y luego decidí quedarme”, dijo Sevilla.
Finalmente, después de mudarse, Sevilla abrió una peluquería, Le Coquette. Ella todavía está orgullosa de su logro.
“Obtener mi licencia de cosmetóloga no fue fácil”, dijo Sevilla. “Trabajé duro para ello y comencé mi negocio. Hace 16 años que empecé con eso y es parte de mi vida”.
Sevilla también está orgullosa de ser madre. Cuando nació Alejandra, su primera hija, “le tenía mucho miedo a todo”, recordó.
“Entonces nació Andrea y fue un embarazo hermoso”, dijo. “Me sentí tan feliz”.
Cuando nació Héctor, su tercer hijo, fue una experiencia nueva para ella Sevilla.
“Cuando nació Héctor, fue maravilloso”, dijo. “Fue un cambio para mí… (de) tener dos niñas pequeñas a tener un bebé varón”.
Sevilla da gracias a Dios por sus hijos y nietos.
“Me siento completa”, dijo. “Mis hijos y nietos son lo mejor que me ha pasado y siempre estaré aquí para ellos”.
Como otras madres, Sevilla tuvo desafíos en la crianza de sus hijos. Aprender a guiarlos y enseñarles a luchar por lo que quieren fueron algunos de los desafíos que enfrentó, recordó.
Sevilla recurrió a uno de sus referentes a la hora de afrontar esos y otros retos: su madre.
“Mi mamá es una inspiración para mí”, dijo. “Ella siempre nos enseñó a estar unidos como familia, y eso es lo que le he enseñado a mis hijos”.
Sevilla, a su vez, está compartiendo la sabiduría que ha aprendido como madre con otras madres de la comunidad. Ella aconseja a las madres que se comuniquen con sus hijos y permanezcan cerca de ellos.
“Sé que en las familias latinas, a veces, las mamás y los papás tienen que trabajar”, dijo. “Sin embargo, les diré a las madres de nuestra comunidad que (tomen tiempo para) hablar con sus hijos, amarlos y tener… una buena comunicación con ellos. Hágales saber a sus hijos que los apoyará en todo momento”.
Sevilla está deseando celebrar el Día de la Madre con sus hijos y nietos.
“El Día de la Madre para mí significa un día de amor y un día para agradecer a Dios por mis hermosos hijos”, dijo. “Cada uno tiene su personalidad. Han creado su propio camino, y estoy muy feliz de verlos felices. Además, me siento feliz porque tengo (una) celebración doble. Nosotras (tenemos) el Día de la Madre en EE.UU y el Día de la Madre en México (el 10 de mayo)”.
