Artificial intelligence (AI) has enormous potential to help humankind.
It also has enormous potential to harm humankind.
As defined on IBM’s website, AI “is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is related to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI does not have to confine itself to methods that are biologically observable.”
As the Science in the News group suggests on its Harvard University webpages, AI began around the middle of the 20th century with the development of computers. However, recent developments in AI are revolutionizing the ways people live and work, as some AI systems have been developed to be intelligent enough to mimic human behavior. Those systems include DALL-E 2, an AI painting app that can generate pictures patterned after such masters as Vincent Van Gogh; and Soundraw, a music generating app. They also include virtual assistants like Siri and Lexi that respond to voice commands to perform tasks, ranging from answering questions to playing music to turning lights on and off.
Within the past several months, however, recent developments in AI have raised concerns about its usage, including accuracy, honesty, fairness and transparency as it transforms industries such as communications and finance. The potential problems caused by more sophisticated AI systems have been discussed, and rightly so, on such TV programs as “60 Minutes” and the John Oliver-hosted comedy program “Last Week Tonight.”
If used properly, AI can help make our lives easier by solving problems and enhancing efficiency. If misused, however, AI can create more problems for us, particularly in the arts, where we could see an outbreak of lawsuits regarding the misuse of AI in creating and/or selling intellectual property. Thus, it’s important that we humans understand the benefits and risks AI might bring us.
In other words, we need to better understand AI’s potential – for good and bad. Only then can we ensure it’s used for good.
La inteligencia artificial tiene gran potencial, pero puede ser peligrosa
La inteligencia artificial (IA) tiene un potencial enorme para ayudar a la humanidad.
También tiene un potencial enorme para dañar a la humanidad.
Como se define en el sitio web de IBM, la IA “es la ciencia e ingeniería para fabricar máquinas inteligentes, especialmente programas informáticos inteligentes. Los problemas potenciales causados por sistemas de inteligencia artificial más sofisticados se han discutido, y con razón, en programas de televisión como “60 Minutes” y el programa de comedia presentado por John Oliver “Last Week Tonight”.
Si se usa correctamente, la IA puede ayudarnos a hacer la vida más fácil al resolver problemas y mejorar la eficiencia. Sin embargo, si se usa mal, la IA puede crearnos más problemas, particularmente en las artes, donde podríamos ver un brote de demandas relacionadas con el mal uso de la IA en la creación y/o venta de propiedad intelectual. Por lo tanto, es importante que los humanos entendamos los beneficios y riesgos que la IA podría traernos.
En otras palabras, necesitamos comprender mejor el potencial de la IA, para bien y para mal. Sólo entonces podemos asegurarnos de que se use para el bien.
