UNAM is offering online education opportunities for those in the United States who wish to resume their studies.
One person who has capitalized on that opportunity has been Gloria Castellanos, a mother of four and co-owner of a painting company with her husband.
Born in Chiapas, Mexico, and a U.S. resident since 2004, Gloria had a desire to complete her high school education since her arrival in the United States, she said. However, she had to postpone her dream several times because of her family responsibilities.
Finally, having more time and stability, Castellanos resumed her studies with UNAM. She enrolled in the high school online program, an opportunity she discovered through the Mexican Consulate.
The enrollment process was straightforward, even for those without easy access to the required documents, Castellanos recalled. For those who need help in obtaining those documents, the Mexican Consulate and UNAM can provide assistance, she said.
Studying online with UNAM provided Castellanos with a quality education, she said. It also helped strengthen her relationships with her children. According to Castellanos, the knowledge she has gained has allowed her to have deeper, more enriching conversations with her children.
UNAM’s online courses are highly effective at simplifying complex concepts, particularly mathematics, Castellanos said.
“The teachers are excellent at explaining things in a simple and enjoyable way,” she said. “There have been nights when it was five in the morning and I was still studying, so hooked was I with the program. That’s how interesting, engaging and fun it is. I even had to set an alarm to remind myself to sleep!”
UNAM advisors were essential to making Castellanos’ experience enjoyable, she suggested. They were always available to answer questions and provide support, she said, also mentioning that advisors can conduct two face-to-face sessions per class within the UNAM system.
Castellanos sees the knowledge she has gained through her online studies as a means to opening new opportunities.
“Education and the power of knowledge have always been important to me,” she said. “They’re not just tools for personal growth; they are the keys that open new opportunities.”
Castellanos plans to pursue another educational opportunity: She wants to earn a bachelor’s degree, she said
For those considering enrolling in a UNAM program, Castellanos offers some advice.
“Don’t be afraid,” she said.
It can be intimidating at first, but the benefits of studying online are enormous and it is more satisfying to try than to be left wondering what could have been, Castellanos said. She especially encourages other women to pursue their education.
“The idea that it’s never too late to learn and grow is something I truly believe in,” Castellanos said. “I hope that my journey serves as a testament to this belief and that it can inspire others. Learning is a beautiful process, and I remain hopeful and optimistic about what the future holds for all those who embrace it.”

La UNAM ofrece oportunidades de educación en línea para aquellos en los Estados Unidos que deseen retomar sus estudios.
Una persona que ha aprovechado esta oportunidad ha sido Gloria Castellanos, madre de cuatro hijos y copropietaria de una empresa de pintura con su esposo.
Nacida en Chiapas, México, y residente de los Estados Unidos desde 2004, Gloria tenía el deseo de completar el bachillerato desde su llegada a los Estados Unidos, dijo. Sin embargo, tuvo que posponer su sueño varias veces debido a sus responsabilidades familiares.
Finalmente, teniendo más tiempo y estabilidad, Castellanos reanudó sus estudios con la UNAM. Se inscribió en el programa de preparatoria en línea, una oportunidad que descubrió a través del Consulado Mexicano.
El proceso de inscripción fue sencillo, incluso para aquellos que no tienen fácil acceso a los documentos requeridos, recordó Castellanos. Para aquellos que necesitan ayuda para obtener esos documentos, el Consulado Mexicano y la UNAM pueden brindar asistencia.
Estudiar en línea con la UNAM proporcionó a Castellanos una educación de calidad, dijo. También ayudó a fortalecer sus relaciones con sus hijos. Según Castellanos, el conocimiento que ha adquirido le ha permitido tener conversaciones más profundas y enriquecedoras con sus hijos.
Los cursos en línea de la UNAM son muy efectivos para simplificar conceptos complejos, particularmente en matemáticas, dijo Castellanos.
“Los profesores son excelentes para explicar las cosas de una manera simple y agradable”, dijo. “Hubo noches en las que eran las cinco de la mañana y todavía estaba estudiando, tan enganchada estaba con el programa. Así de interesante, atractivo y divertido es. ¡Incluso tuve que poner una alarma para recordarme dormir!”
Los asesores de la UNAM fueron esenciales para que la experiencia de Castellanos fuera agradable, sugirió. Siempre estuvieron disponibles para responder preguntas y brindar apoyo, dijo, también mencionó que los asesores pueden realizar dos sesiones presenciales por clase dentro del sistema de la UNAM.
Castellanos ve el conocimiento que ha adquirido a través de sus estudios en línea como un medio para encontrar nuevas oportunidades.
“La educación y el poder del conocimiento siempre han sido importantes para mí”, dijo. “No son sólo herramientas para el crecimiento personal; son las llaves que abren nuevas oportunidades”.

Para aquellos que consideran inscribirse en un programa de la UNAM, Castellanos ofrece algunos consejos.
“No tengas miedo”, dijo.
Puede ser intimidante al principio, pero los beneficios de estudiar en línea son enormes y es más satisfactorio intentarlo que quedarse preguntándose qué podría haber sido, dijo Castellanos. Ella anima especialmente a otras mujeres a seguir su educación.
“La idea de que nunca es demasiado tarde para aprender y crecer es algo en lo que realmente creo”, dijo Castellanos. “Espero que mi trayectoria sirva como testimonio de esta creencia y que pueda inspirar a otros. Aprender es un proceso hermoso, y sigo esperanzada y optimista sobre lo que el futuro reserva para todos aquellos que lo abrazan.”
