Sporting Kansas City fell 1-0 to Houston Dynamo and was eliminated from the MLS Cup Playoffs.
Argentinian Franco Escobar scored the only goal of the match in the 39th minute of the first half at the Shell Energy Stadium in Houston. Alan Pulido had the chance to equalize in the 41st minute, but his attempt was rejected by a defender in a controversial play where Kansas City players and coaches claimed a penalty.
“There’s no doubt in my mind. It’s a handball,” said Sporting KC Head Coach Peter Vermes. “It’s a handball and then a red card because it’s stopping a goal-scoring situation.”
“It’s not the first time that we’ve had a decision like that go against us,” said captain Johnny Russell. “But I’m not going to sit here and be a sore loser and say that’s why we lost the game. It’s not. But it’s right after they score. That gets us back in the game,” he concluded.
Vermes’ team sought the equalizer in the second half, but despite their efforts, they couldn’t achieve the feat. In the end, Houston Dynamo advanced, and Sporting Kansas City returned home with shattered dreams in a season where no one expected much from this team.
Sporting Kansas City started the 2023 season with a defeat against Portland Timbers, followed by nine more winless matches. On the 11th round, against the Seattle Sounders, Alan Pulido and his teammates secured their first victory with a 2-1 win in Seattle.
From there, Kansas City navigated through the standings and, with two consecutive victories at the end of the season, earned their playoff spot finishing in the eighth position in the Western Conference.
In the playoffs, they eliminated the San Jose Earthquakes on a penalty shootout in the Western Conference wildcard. They also defeated St. Louis City SC in the first round with two dominating victories but fell short in the semifinals against Houston Dynamo FC.
“I think that the group gave everything that they had. They really did,” Vermes said in a press conference. “In the times when they lacked a lot of confidence just because they weren’t getting the results and everybody was saying how bad they were, they truly, truly fought for everything. They accomplished an incredible turnaround, but they’re competitors and they want more and I’m sure that they’re going to feel like they missed out on an opportunity here tonight.”
Sporting Kansas City will take a three-week break and return to plan for the 2024 season. Peter Vermes did not provide details on whether he would release players and sign others.
Alan Pulido is an important player in Vermes’ scheme and, despite receiving offers from Mexican teams, he chose to stay in the MLS. Pulido ended the 2023 season with 14 goals in 32 matches in all competitions.

El equipo de Vermes buscó el empate en la segunda parte, pero a pesar de sus esfuerzos no pudo lograr la hazaña. Al final, Houston Dynamo avanzó y Sporting Kansas City regresó a casa con los sueños destrozados en una temporada donde nadie esperaba mucho de este equipo.

Realmente lo dieron”, afirmó Vermes en rueda de prensa. “En los momentos en que les faltaba mucha confianza simplemente porque no estaban obteniendo los resultados y todo el mundo decía lo malos que eran, realmente lucharon por todo. Lograron un cambio increíble, pero son competidores y quieren más y estoy seguro de que sentirán que perdieron una oportunidad aquí esta noche”.
Sporting Kansas City se tomará un descanso de tres semanas y volverá a planificar la temporada 2024. Vermes no proporcionó detalles sobre si liberaría jugadores y ficharía a otros.
Alan Pulido es un jugador importante en el esquema de Vermes y, pese a recibir ofertas de equipos mexicanos, optó por quedarse en la MLS. Pulido finalizó la temporada 2023 con 14 goles en 32 partidos en todas las competiciones.
