Some contributions by a Latino running back helped Kansas City end a scoring drought Sunday (Nov. 26) – and helped make Chiefs coach Andy Reid the winningest coach in franchise history.
Isaiah Pacheco, whose reported background includes Puerto Rican and Dominican heritage, ran for two touchdowns during Kansas City’s 31-17 victory over Las Vegas at Allegiant Stadium. With the Chiefs trailing 14-0, Pacheco burrowed up the middle for a 1-yard, second-quarter touchdown.
Pacheco’s 1-yard TD run in the third quarter broke a 14-14 deadlock and helped Kansas City outscore Las Vegas 17-3 the second half. The touchdown also ended a string of three straight games in which the Chiefs had been shut out during the second half, including a 21-17 loss to Philadelphia Nov. 20 at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
Pacheco paced Kansas City’s ground game with 55 yards on 15 carries.
“Those were toughest 55 yards I’ve ever been around,” Reid said during his postgame press conference.
The product of Rutgers University “ran really hard,” Reid told reporters. That approach to carrying the football stems from Pacheco’s approach to practicing, Pacheco suggested.
“When you’re out in the game, you (have) got guys flying around,” he told reporters. “If you’re not going as hard as you can, that’s when you get hurt and things happen. So my mindset is to go hard every day in practice.”
Pacheco also was among five Chiefs with at least 30 receiving yards. Rashee Rice led Kansas City with 107 yards and a touchdown on eight receptions. Travis Kelce caught six passes for 91 yards. Pacheco and Skyy Moore each had 34 yards, with Pacheco catching five passes and Moore snagging three. Noah Gray caught three passes for 30 yards.
By claiming the AFC West Division road meeting, Pacheco and his teammates gave Reid his 125th win as Kansas City’s head coach. As multiple media outlets reported, Reid supplanted Pro Football Hall of Famer Hank Stram atop the team’s all-time list for head coaching victories. Stram coached from 1960, when the franchise was based in Dallas and nicknamed the Texans, until 1974.
The win also put the Chiefs at 8-3 overall entering their meeting with Green Bay (5-6) this Sunday night (Dec. 3) at Lambeau Field.
Las Vegas dropped to 5-7, with five games left in the NFL’s regular season. The Raiders have a bye this week.
“There’s nothing against us winning five in a row and sneaking into the (AFC) playoffs,” Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow told reporters. “And that’s kind of the goal. … I’m hoping … everyone in this locker room kind of has that (in) the back of their mind this whole bye week.”
