For the second time this pro football season, Kansas City will be the home team against Miami.
This time, however, Kansas City will actually be at home.
The Chiefs are scheduled to host Miami Saturday night (Jan. 13) at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, in the first round of the AFC playoffs – nearly 10 weeks to the day they played the Dolphins during the regular season. On Nov. 5, the teams played at the Waldstadion (a.k.a., Deutsche Bank Park) in Frankfurt, Germany, as part of the International Series staged by the NFL, their parent league. The Chiefs, who were designated as the home team, won 21-14.
Kansas City (11-6) enters the rematch having won two straight and three of its last four. The Chiefs closed the regular season by edging the Los Angeles Chargers 13-12 Sunday (Jan. 7) at SoFi Stadium. Backup quarterback and native Missourian Blaine Gabbert, stepping in as the Chiefs rested starter Patrick Mahomes II, broke free for 25- and 14-yard scrambles to set up the game-winning score – a 41-yard field goal by Harrison Butker with 49 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
“Blaine Gabbert with the long runs – I mean, who would’ve thought that? He did a great job with it (scrambling),” Chiefs coach Andy Reid commented during the opening remarks of his postgame press conference.
The Chiefs are seeded third for the single-elimination tournament. Miami (11-6) is seeded sixth. The Dolphins were in position for the second seed, but that slipped away when they lost 21-14 Sunday night at home to Buffalo. Buffalo claimed its fourth straight AFC East Division title with the victory. The Bills, who also finished the regular season 11-6, secured the title based on tiebreakers with the Dolphins and the No. 2 AFC playoff seed based on tiebreakers with Miami and Kansas City.
“Guys really laid it on the line and fell short,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel told reporters during a livestreamed press conference Monday (Jan. 8). We fell short of … our goal going into the season to win the AFC East. But at the same time, does that matter? No. … We’re one of the 14 teams that still have games.”
Of those 14 ballclubs, seven are in the AFC playoffs, with the other seven in the NFC playoffs. In February, the AFC and NFC champions will meet for the NFL title – the Super Bowl.
The Chiefs are the defending Super Bowl champions.
