Shooting at megachurch leaves community in shock
A shooting incident that took place Sunday (Feb. 11) at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Texas has left the community and worshippers in shock – and has drawn international media coverage.
Genesse Ivonne Moreno, a 36-year-old Hispanic trans woman identified as the shooter, reportedly opened fire inside the church, one of the United States’ largest megachurches. According to CNN, the shooting took place as the church was about to hold a Spanish-language service.
The suspect was killed by two off-duty officers working security at the church. Those injured included a 7-year-old boy who entered the church with Moreno, identified by USA Today and other outlets as her child; and a man in his 50s, who was reportedly wounded in one of his legs.
According to multiple media outlets, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner revealed during a press conference that Moreno had entered the church wearing a trench coat and backpack while carrying a rifle.
Moreno also claimed to possess a bomb, but no explosives were found upon investigation.
The shooting has drawn attention not only for the violence but also for the potential motives behind the act. Authorities are investigating multiple possibilities, including terrorism and hate crimes.
Antisemitic proclamations have been uncovered while investigating Moreno, who reportedly had a history of arrests and mental health issues. Moreover, Moreno’s rifle was inscribed with the word “Palestina.”
The megachurch is known for its massive congregation and global outreach, with services reaching around 100 countries. Osteen, who has achieved notoriety for preaching what has been dubbed “the prosperity gospel,” has led the Houston metro area church since 1999. He succeeded its founder and his father, John Osteen.
The incident has prompted calls for unity and strength in faith, as expressed by Osteen and others affected. As the investigation continues, the church and the community are focusing on recovery and supporting one another.
Tiroteo en megaiglesia deja a la comunidad en shock
El incidente de un tiroteo que tuvo lugar el domingo (11 de febrero) en la Iglesia Lakewood de Joel Osteen en Texas ha dejado a la comunidad y a los fieles en shock, y ha atraído la cobertura de medios internacionales.
Genesse Ivonne Moreno, una mujer trans hispana de 36 años identificada como la tiradora, supuestamente abrió fuego dentro de la iglesia, una de las megaiglesias más grandes de Estados Unidos. Según CNN, el tiroteo ocurrió justo cuando la iglesia estaba a punto de celebrar un servicio en español.
La sospechosa fue abatida por dos oficiales fuera de servicio que trabajaban en la seguridad de la iglesia. Entre los heridos se incluyó a un niño de 7 años que entró a la iglesia con Moreno, identificado por USA Today y otros medios como su hijo; y un hombre en sus 50s, que supuestamente fue herido en una de sus piernas.
Según múltiples medios de comunicación, el jefe de policía de Houston, Troy Finner, reveló durante una conferencia de prensa que Moreno había entrado a la iglesia vistiendo un abrigo largo y una mochila mientras portaba un rifle.
