Helen Ortiz, one of the women being recognized by Dos Mundos in observance of March as Women’s History Month, attributes her successes as a businesswoman in real estate and as a bodybuilder to the obstacles and heartaches she has overcome.
“I don’t see challenges in what I have to face in the industry or life in general; I see opportunities,” Ortiz said. “I am always relentless to turn setbacks into comebacks and every closed door or obstacle into a new chance.”
Through her real estate work, Ortiz strives to help potential homeowners and entrepreneurs overcome obstacles by educating and preparing them to achieve their dreams of homeownership or business ownership.
Ortiz has encountered a few obstacles of her own while working in real estate, she suggested.
“Commercial real estate has always been a ‘male dominated industry’ – and to a point still is,” Ortiz said. “It’s not easy for a woman to infiltrate the industry and more so being Latina. I am trying to encourage and influence other women to work hard to change the narrative by identifying your limiting beliefs, (using) self-reflection and education, (and telling them to) expect setbacks but keep going anyways! This applies to the field.”
Ortiz has overcome a few obstacles in her bodybuilding career, too. Despite being diagnosed with stomach and lung cancer, she has experienced successes in International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation competitions, representing her home country of Guatemala in international competitions.
Bodybuilding has taught Ortiz patience, perseverance and discipline, qualities that have contributed to her success in other areas of life, she said.
Ortiz credits her grandmother as her biggest inspiration for overcoming her obstacles. Her grandmother showed her the importance of hard work and resilience, she said.
And the influence of Ortiz’s grandmother has driven her to empower others to find their potential as business owners and individuals. As a member and board member of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City, she works to promote economic opportunities for the Hispanic business community.
“When I came into the Hispanic Chamber, like most people do, I was looking for opportunities to network and find ways to grow my business,” Ortiz said. “But what I found was much more than that. The chamber mission is to develop a business network that provides the Hispanic business community with cohesion and strength while promoting economic opportunities, but all that is done with love and respect for everyone.”
Ortiz’s desire to empower others extends beyond her professional endeavors. A strong supporter of Cristo Rey High School, she’s participating in Dancing with the Kansas City Stars, a school fundraiser to help students from low-income families fulfill their aspirations through education.
Like her desire to empower business owners and homeowners, Ortiz’s commitment to education is personal. Forced to leave Guatemala as a young girl, she understands the value of educational opportunities, she said.
In observance of Women’s History Month, Ortiz encourages women to discover their passions, embrace their gifts and use them to make a difference in the world.
“I celebrate being a woman every day,” she said. “We are so much at once. … We are daughters, mothers, wives, professionals, etc. We do it all without hesitation or thinking if we can or not. …We just do it!”
“To every woman out there, I say go and find out what your passions are. Find out what gift God gave you,” Ortiz added. “Go after them and be relentless. It’s our responsibility to find out what our gift is and use it to make a difference in others. You are never too young or too old to begin. You are the only one who can write and tell your story! Convierte los obstáculos en oportunidades en los negocios y en el fisicoculturismo
Helen Ortiz, una de las mujeres reconocidas por Dos Mundos en conmemoración de marzo como el Mes de la Historia de la Mujer, atribuye sus éxitos como empresaria en bienes raíces y como fisicoculturista a los obstáculos y desafíos que ha superado.
“No veo desafíos en lo que tengo que enfrentar en la industria o en la vida en general; veo oportunidades”, dijo Ortiz. “Siempre soy implacable para convertir los contratiempos en renacimientos y cada puerta cerrada u obstáculo en una nueva oportunidad”.
A través de su trabajo en bienes raíces, Ortiz se esfuerza por ayudar a los posibles propietarios y empresarios a superar obstáculos educándolos y preparándolos para alcanzar sus sueños de ser propietarios de viviendas o negocios.
Ortiz ha encontrado algunos obstáculos propios mientras trabajaba en bienes raíces, sugirió.
“Los bienes raíces comerciales siempre han sido una ‘industria dominada por hombres’ – y hasta cierto punto aún lo es”, dijo Ortiz. “No es fácil para una mujer infiltrarse en la industria y más aún siendo latina. Estoy tratando de animar e influir en otras mujeres para que trabajen duro para cambiar la narrativa identificando tus creencias limitantes, (usando) la auto-reflexión y la educación, (y diciéndoles que) esperen contratiempos pero sigan adelante de todos modos. Esto se aplica a cualquier campo”.
Ortiz también ha superado algunos obstáculos en su carrera de fisicoculturismo. A pesar de haber sido diagnosticada con cáncer de estómago y pulmón, ha experimentado éxitos en competiciones de la Federación Internacional de Fitness y Culturismo, representando a su país natal, Guatemala, en competiciones internacionales.
El fisicoculturismo le ha enseñado a Ortiz paciencia, perseverancia y disciplina, cualidades que han contribuido a su éxito en otras áreas de la vida, dijo.
Ortiz atribuye a su abuela como su mayor inspiración para superar sus obstáculos. Su abuela le mostró la importancia del trabajo duro y la resiliencia.
Y la influencia de la abuela de Ortiz la ha impulsado a empoderar a otros para que encuentren su potencial como empresarios e individuos. Como miembro y miembro de la junta de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana del Gran Kansas City, trabaja para promover oportunidades económicas para la comunidad empresarial hispana.
“Cuando entré en la Cámara Hispana, como la mayoría de las personas, estaba buscando oportunidades para establecer contactos y encontrar formas de hacer crecer mi negocio”, dijo Ortiz. “Pero lo que encontré fue mucho más que eso. La misión de la cámara es desarrollar una red de negocios que brinde a la comunidad empresarial hispana cohesión y fuerza mientras promueve oportunidades económicas, pero todo eso se hace con amor y respeto por todos”.
El deseo de Ortiz de empoderar a otros va más allá de sus esfuerzos profesionales. Firme partidaria de la Cristo Rey High School, está participando en Dancing with the Kansas City Stars, una recaudación de fondos escolar para ayudar a los estudiantes de familias de bajos ingresos a cumplir sus aspiraciones a través de la educación.
Al igual que su deseo de empoderar a los propietarios de negocios y viviendas, el compromiso de Ortiz con la educación es personal. Obligada a dejar Guatemala cuando era una niña, comprende el valor de las oportunidades educativas.
En conmemoración del Mes de la Historia de la Mujer, Ortiz alienta a las mujeres a descubrir sus pasiones, abrazar sus dones y usarlos para hacer una diferencia en el mundo.
“Celebro ser mujer todos los días”, dijo. “Somos tantas cosas a la vez… Somos hijas, madres, esposas, profesionales, etc. Lo hacemos todo sin dudar o pensar si podemos o no… ¡Simplemente lo hacemos!”
“A todas las mujeres allá afuera, les digo que vayan y descubran cuáles son sus pasiones. Descubran qué regalo les dio Dios”, agregó Ortiz. “Persíganlos y sean implacables. Es nuestra responsabilidad descubrir cuál es nuestro regalo y usarlo para hacer una diferencia en los demás.
